July 22, 2019 update: With great sadness, we found out today that one of our favorite actors of all-time, David Hedison, passed away at the age of 92. His daughters, Alexandra and Serena, were by his side when he died. Said his family in a statement:
“Even in our deep sadness, we are comforted by the memory of our wonderful father. He loved us all dearly and expressed that love every day. He was adored by so many, all of whom benefitted from his warm and generous heart. Our dad brought joy and humor wherever he went and did so with great style.”
RIP David Hedison, and thank you.
===============================================================================
Continuing with our review of this special season and the 'Space/Sci-Fi/Fantasy segment of the schedule, today we look at one of television's all-time outstanding producers, Irwin Allen, and his first big hit on television - Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
This clip is from the outstanding 1995 TV documentary special: 'The Fantasy Worlds of Irwin Allen', and features host June Lockhart (more on her big hit series Lost In Space this coming week!) and interview with one of my all time heroes, David Hedison.
Hedison played Seaview Commander Lee Crane, and co-starred with Richard Basehart, who played Admiral Harriman Nelson. Also shown in this clip are scenes from the pilot episode, which also guest starred one of the television's best and favorites - Eddie Albert (more on Mr. Albert later this month!)
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea ran four seasons on ABC, from September 14, 1964 to March 31, 1968. Like so many other television series honored here at Television Vanguard, 'Voyage' is also available on DVD box sets - outstanding series and DVD collection. Like so many other series during this 1960's era, 'Voyage' was filmed in black and white during the 1964 and 1965 seasons, and in color during the final two+ seasons from 1965-1968.
We'll be paying tribute to the great Irwin Allen all this coming week, but it is important to learn just how much he and Gene Rodenberry in particular advanced the technology behind special efforts on television series. Both men had amazing minds and imaginations, and television is all the better for it.
This video clip is presented here on KZbin for the entertainment and informational value of the viewer, and no copyright infringement is intended.
Enjoy!

The show actually got me into trouble in first grade. My teacher wrote home to my folks telling them, I don't think you should let him watch the show for a while! He's obsessed, and it's all he talks about! Lol! Circa 1967

Growing up in LA in the 1960', I truly loved this wonderful program! The cast was simply amazing with Mr. Basehart was the ideal admiral, inventor, scientist and leader, while Mr. Hedison always brought to my mind what a true gentleman should be. I believe they inspired many young men of that era in countless ways. Although they have passed into the next level, their legacy lives on! Thanks to Mr. Allen for all the memorable entertainment he gave us in a time when America and the world was in its ascendancy. Thank you!

Enjoyed this show immensely as so many others that i was just fortunate enough to also had a Model Kit of the Seaview Submarine. Testor's Glue and put together pieces, not too big but not small either. I'm about dead probably myself closing in on 70 years old and i still watch this TV Series via a HDMI Cable to my flat screen & Laptop! These actors were magnificent, well selected whether by chance or choice. I still wish "Curly", Henry Kulky, would have been able to live beyond the first season or two more. The series and all members/cast/creators sure made this 1960's Show a memorable one. Thanks for Sharing.

Such a handsome guy and great actor! This show has continued to this day to be one of my all time faves along with Bonanza and Hawaii five-0! During my 68 years of life I will admit I had crushes on Lee Crane (David Hedison),James MacArthur as Danny on 5 o, and Pernell Roberts as Adam on Bonanza! Then I progressed to the Dallas Cowboys with a crush for Charlie Waters! America's Team was my team and keyed on Charlie! I watched him getting the arm broken and I watched him come back with the arm always protected against further damage. I watched him getting his bell rung numerous times and saw the devastation knee injuries but he always came back! I was Blessed to view Roger Staubach's "Hail Mary " pass as well! YES, I was and still am a big fan of all these wonderful guys whom I have been Blessed to view thru the years! I have them all filed in my heart as well as my precious hubby Jerry of 27 years and our wonderful fur baby Sugar Bear! A devoted Tx fan of all these greats and I will forever love my Jerry and Sugar Bear! Blessings! 👩‍🦳🐾🙏🌊 almost forgot...I am also a fan of Alex O'loughlin aka Steve Mcgarrett of 5 oasis well! 🌊🇺🇸👩‍🦳🐾💕💕

I met David Hedison at a Wonderfest Event in Louisville, KY back around 2004. It was a Sci Fi convention where my son sculpted and sold his Dinosaurs. I almost did not recognize him. He had a beard and almost looked like one of the Amish here where I live in Ohio. David was well educated and attended Brown University. He was also surprisingly shorter than I had thought. I'm 6'1" and towered over him. I did not know he passed away....

Hedison made a fantastic captain I still love the show today. I wish they could remake it all of the models are on Pinterest guys have them in their backyard LOL I started to write Headison a letter before he passed to thank him for all the great memories because I used to watch this with my father and my four brothers. I remember when color TVs came out. Then I'll never forget me and my little brother used to wrestle around and stuff and we be yelling for damage control or breaking out protective shields LOL from shows like this and star trek and stuff. My dad used to do taxidermy on the side and one of the bedrooms we had was one Revo real big room and I used to fly a pheasant over at brother in the dark yelling attack lol the show is really timeless, the special effects and studio that was built in the 60s is not all that far out a date that it wouldn't work today I mean we've had advances in computers and stuff but everything still looks cool in from a military standpoint the torpedo room and everything it was just cool and you kind of liked all the characters on the show too they all just seem cool. I also like the Captain Nemo movies there's just something about sci-fi underwater exploration I find it really interesting even though after watching some real submarines it's really nothing like that because it's very dark down there they basically see by radar. Sometimes I like the wild job they did on the creatures and stuff. The thing is there is still a huge following to the show today and people are still building models of the SeaView we should write letters to the network and tell them to bring the show back they on Hasbro so they all know the toy companies and the truth is they could make a fortune on a show like this again just with the models and toys lunchboxes and just all the stuff we used to have back in the 60s and 70s. I'm glad I got to grow up when I did the world today seems like no fun And it's cool video games are and stuff they don't get kids outside the way a minibike or go kart or something like we had back in the day did

A few mistakes that Irwin Allen made with his sci fi shows, was not bumping them further into the future ,and not placing them all inside the same decade. That way, a big crossover could have been done .A good writer still could do it, but it would have to be done in comics, or animation. since most of the actors have passed on,

No. Leave well enough alone now. The shows are fun but they all got extremely silly. Especially Lost in Space. I love the show but it eventually turns into a comedy. Voyage gets silly as well but it probably the best out of the Four Allen Shows....

One of my favorite shows from the 60s .and was that June Lockhart doing the narration? And don't forget his most famous line :he was the fly "help me help me".

Precursor to Star Trek. Even the shaking. Just underwater instead of outer space. Allen vs Roddenberry.

I've always thought those shows had a similar feel as well...

If Irwin Allen had wanted that show to be grim and serious, he should have skipped those recycled monsters. Still, I loved that show!
