Remembering Gina Lopez (08.21.19)

I knew Gina Lopez by her Ananda Marga Missionary name. I worked with her in Africa from 1980-1991. She was always positive about everything. She had a strong determination to do concrete things. She worked hard. She was humble. She was courageous. She was an excellent team player. It was a time of great hardship and challenge in Africa in the 1980’s when those countries struggled to survive economically in a world dominated by the super powers and former colonial masters. So our unity as a spiritual family, our own youthful exuberance and constant inspiration from our spiritual Master Shrii Shrii Anandamurti helped us to enjoy and thrive during those difficult years. Gina was an integral part of them. We were all deeply shocked when she suddenly departed-and that too with our organizational head! But her commitment to helping the downtrodden remained a central theme of her life whether she lived in Africa or in her native Philippines. I salute Gina with all the sincerity of my heart. And I am certain that she is now enjoying the Infinite Bliss that she earnestly pursued in her life and which caused our paths to cross for a brief portion of her earthly sojourn.

The greatness of Gina Lopez in reaching out to the marginalized was never skin-deep and how she pursued the highest commitment was inimitable. Unmatched. The formidable fortress of ABS-CBN Foundation maybe far from the glitzy corporate set-up of ABS-CBN Network Inc but in terms of influence and indelible impact, all her efforts will be forever embedded in the hearts and minds, not only to every voiceless Filipinos and communities (especially the indigenous communities) that her advocated cause had touched. But even by every service oriented organizations in the Philippines whom she had inspired and worked in alliance, to be more formidable, to undauntedly move forward with their cause. Being the daughter of a great Philanthropist (Eugenio "Heny" Lopez), when she finally decided to come home, and hold unto his father's crusade after his demised. She aptly embraced them with all her heart, and mind, and soul. For the longest time, we've heard the mantra "In the Service of the Filipino" of their network, aired free nationwide. Despite her prudence and humility, she echoed a loud voice, loud enough to call the attention of dignitaries from other countries. When the Protocol Office of Malacanang coordinated the visit of Queen Sofia of Spain, everyone were truly amazed how her influence had crossed borders. Preparation went smoothly and on the day of the visit. After the ceremonies, there was a beautiful interaction, and the scenarios that followed became more beautiful with the unmindful gestures of the children, unknowingly playful with the royalties who had also defied protocols to touch and embrace them back. With great humility like her father, she would walked the halls of their network in all simplicity without the usual bodyguard or glamour. Way back then, what was more touching was how she would treat with dignity every "rescued child" in a hidden temporary home (in a village in QC). Inspired by her visit to China (where the "one child policy" was implemented), she envisioned in the Philippines the realization of the "The Children's Village" in Norzagaray, Bulacan. Believing in a campaign that "it takes a Village to raise a child"; where she fervently raised funds for its implementation. In the Association of Foundations in the Philippines, she received remarkable support. Even the competing networks, had donated a hefty amount for her cause and the corporate walls of the country's leading Business District in Makati had given way to hear her out and pledged long term support. Unstoppable, she culminated all her efforts by putting grit in what she had started. Endlessly talked to the lawmakers to legislate a "Law" for the protection of the woman and children against violence. Not the half baked implementation. Making what used to be impossible, possible. Empowering Law enforcers, even the ordinary Filipinos in its provisions, to ensure its success. Her battle for the protection of the environment was unwavering. What used to be laughing matters became dream projects emulated not only locally but also abroad. Her particular concern for La Mesa Dam and the corresponding La Mesa Water Shed Rehabilitation was lauded. Even his father from up above is surely proud of her. Several thousand square kilometers of denuded mountains rehabilitated through effective reforestation programs that continuously happened nationwide. Millions and millions of trees planted involving the local folks. The indigenous communities love her where she was wholeheartedly treated like ONE with them and for them. In the social strata where the smallest percentage remained indifferent and calloused, she steadfastly had taken stride driven by her goodness. She embodies in her persona her thoughts, her words, her good intentions and her life values into practice..giving meaning and substance to them. All toward her highest vision. Selfless. Patriotic. And as life played out in minutes, in months and in decades; her legacy and her beautiful life-story will live beyond her lifetime. Despite the synergy of the holistic approach in all her advocated projects and long term programs. She never claimed that she had done it all by herself but share the glory of success with all those who had taken part. No matter how big or small it may have been. Even the Gods in heavens will nod in unison that not even the most brilliant youth of this generation and the next could thread her path and the beautiful life she had chosen to live. Farewell Ms Gina Lopez. You will truly be missed. #Love

Gina Lopez deserved to have a monument. According to her services to the country and to the people she should be considered a heroine of the country.There are some monuments of the people standing there who did not do half of what Gina had done. I hope one of these days, she would be given an outstanding award for her dedication and hard work to be displayed openly for all the people to see and admire all of her accomplishments. Gina Lopez should've lived a hundred years. She deserved a long life because she won't waste a day of it.
