The young lady who, ten years later, became my wife was at the park with her family. She told me how scared she was when they ran for their lives. The destruction to her neighborhood was terrible. It changed the dynamics of the hood. Mom and pop stores that were looted and burned never came back. Riots do not solve problems. They make them worse.

It still happens dickinson police department in galveston county,tx department jumped me, while hand cuffed srgt.kuie pointed a gun to my head called me a wetbak, i spoke to captain. Chromie and he ignored me said it was legal for the cop to point a gun to my head calling me racial slurs while threatening to kill me...all bogus charges on me were droped and the cops gave a testament saying i was mistaken, and they confused me with someone else supposedly thats the story i was a mistaken identity, after jumped, beat, handcuffed, threaten to be killed they locked me up ..they said they thought i was someone else i was 14-15 years old at that time. They had my mother show up at the station they told my mother they thought i was someone else, they never showed proof,or explained who they confused me with it was their story to get away for what they did to me.

I never knew JOSÉ "JOE" CÁMPOS TORRÉS...I was only about 9 years old, when the tragic event that took his life happened. I never forgot... and never will,.... The memories of the riots, in my neighborhood, Barrio Northside, at the Moody Park. Who can ever forget something like this ? As I grew older, and watching and learning more about his death, by what turned out to be 6 H.P.D. officers, I would learn the facts from the hear say. Again, I was only 9 years old. Today is May 26,2024. I took time from work, here at the Port of Houston, because today we remember those who served our country, and never came home, and those who did....... however,... Torres came to mind. I look up his story on KZbin. I remembered that "JOE" was in the military.... and today that would make him a veteran. Sadly, he actually never made it home. He was not killed in a foreign country, but in his own hometown ! Years have gone and passed... but again,I never forgot the traffic death of "JOE" TORRÉS. I do not know exactly why, but I can say this, however, about WHY I never forgot about him;... ..I Believe it's like they say, it doesn't matter how old or young you are,.. when you see or hear about something like this, YOU NEVER FORGET ! I understand the reason for riots. I understand the racism. I think we all at some point struggle with sin... but I see, in those days, when H.P.D. did this to JOE, we can say they did it to ALL OF US ! Today, I can say, that I haven't cried in a long time... but even now, this story is so brutal, when I think of what, or try to imagine,... Yes, tears cover my eyes. That's ok, because a real man can cry for the evils he sees, even as Jesus Christ the Lord wept many times, for the right reasons ! So with this, of like to say, to JOE : REST IN HONOR MR. TORRÉS... YOU ARE GONE, BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN, SIR !

It's amazing what they have created in his memory. Horrible that it's taken this long. We have much work to do still.

I was living in south Houston back then. It was terrible. Everyone was pissed. I am sure all races, ethnic groups were mad. I watched it on Channel 13 out of houston.

HPD is bad about covering things up. The Turtles are a example of what's still going on.
