He was my favorite. The way he drew the most beautiful full sound out of the violin without muscling the instrument. That Goldmark recording is astounding.

Thank you for this interview, you shared so much story and wisdom. Milstein was a great violinist and musician, a gem in the history of the instrument. I think now I would have loved to meet him and to have had a lesson, this was close.

Milstein's account of the Brahms concerto with Steinberg is absolutely thrilling. But even more thrilling is his account of that concerto with Karajan and the Lucern Festival orchestra ( used to be) available on TAHRA records

Thank you for sharing these anecdotes and insights- Milstein was certainly a non pareil among violinists and musicians in general. As you say, he was always searching, inventing, rethinking, exploring - it kept his spirit and his playing fresh and compelling to the very last recital. How he could make an open string or a harmonic without vibrato sound right as rain, and how his playing and phrasing sounded so effortless- a truly great master!
