I was a little underwhelmed by Revenge of Shinobi at first because I played it years later (not too many, think 1992 or 1993, I forget which) and my expectations were set a little too high. It grows on you, and the soundtrack is amazing. The music on the Hong Kong level is one of my top 3 genesis tracks.
@Prizrak-hv6qk
@Prizrak-hv6qk 5 жыл бұрын
It was my second Genesis game after Sonic. It did feel rather dated in comparison, mostly when it comes to the less impressive use of color and the flat backgrounds, and I didn't like the fact that you don't get to use the sword much compared to Ninja Gaiden. Felt hard as hell after the first stage too but no one did tell you about the double jump. You had to discover it yourself. :) The music was impressive from the start. It really did grow on me a lot. I ended up loving it but could never get past the last stage.

@Prizrak-hv6qk
@Prizrak-hv6qk 5 жыл бұрын
@@jeremygregorio7472 Not sure. I got it from a pawn shop without a manual. Was before the Internet too. Needless to say, it took me some time and a lot of frustration to get through the second stage, before I started doing some accidental double-jumps and piecing it all together. :) From what I recall, even after I figured the double jumps out, they took some effort to master, as the timing on them was very precise.

Revenge of Shinobi, imo is inarguably the first "killer app" for the Genesis, secondly being Musha in 1990. Forget Sonic 1, and even Castlevania IV this is where it's at, easily a Top 7 16-bit action platformer. Quick and technically challenging gameplay with a high skill ceiling, awesome soundtrack, fantastically intricate level design some having two planes to traverse like the military and highway that are almost puzzle-like. Moreover at 7:00, that jump is much easier by not destroying the right hand box, and jumping from on top of it. Also your music is slowed down slightly from some reason. I booted my Kega Fusion China save state just now and it definitely plays faster than that, the way it does on hardware. Anyway, super classic Gen game and action platformer forever, alongside Shinobi 3, which is also brilliant, in its own unique ways. Thanks for another fantastic video Sega Lord X, this game deserves more attention.

This was the second Mega Drive game I bought and I played it front to back a hundred times over the following years. Played through one last time before I sold the console circa 1996 and I finally got the 'good' ending. I didn't know about the hidden POW in the 2nd to last room (and knew a less than optimal route) so I hadn't gotten through the maze with POW intact till that night. What a feeling. Shinobi III has a lot of improvements in the movement but the level design isn't nearly as fun.

That was my most wanted genesis game back then and after owning shinobi on the mastersystem, let's just say my expectations were quiet high for that game. Thankfully, sega exceeded all of them and that game ended up being a great 1990 Christmas for me. Great video as usual. 👏👏👏👏

I used to watch the attract mode of this on loop at Toys R Us in 1989 and/or 1990. It was not a playable kiosk. It was definitely one of the top games I wanted for the system. I'd get the Genesis two years later, but never got around to getting Revenge of Shinobi. I don't recall seeing it around at the time. I know it came out on the six-in-one cart, but I don't remember seeing that one either. I actually didn't get to play the game for many years with life and stuff getting in the way. I could see the game's quality, but I did have trouble getting into it at first, especially after playing the faster, looser sequel Shinobi 3. But I gave Revenge of Shinobi more chances based on reviews by people I respect, and I did come to love this one. It's tough in many spots, but very satisfying. It helped when I realized how many hidden power ups there are. I used a different strategy on Godzilla, switching levels constantly and getting hits in while avoiding each attack. The timing window is small. I prefer triggering his tail attack than dealing with just his fire.
@SegaLordX
@SegaLordX 5 жыл бұрын
It's a good strategy, actually. I got to the point where I just used the invincibility art and the powered up shurikens and lit him up without moving. You can drop him fast that way.

”Revenge of Shinobi” is a distintive dynamic dynamite of a game to be true verily I only got it some years ago, browsing for games where I had to pre book it to get it (not in stock). Have it on MEGA CD with other titles I like Monaco GP and Columns on an Arcade Classics Disc, I love how the flow of the game works, I have yet to win the firs boss fight and to learn the most strategic way to attack, use magic or just try to beat it(get away from the battle field) and stay away, what I am a big fan of with Revenge is that it i difficult for you have to be strategic not because of bad level design and I felt in control right from the very first time I just sat back relaxed and played it. It is as an Arcade/Platformer still a challange having tried some more but a perfect gaming experience even if you are novice playing with extra weaponry and a smaller swarm of enemies after you, As an Onlooker of the show since the first season, when we who were in the viewing public found your vids via take a chance browsing online in the middle of the night time, I feel fondness and happiness that I am within the crowd for which you choose to make a very great and passionate presentation about such a good game, being so true and honest about it. I was waiting to see you wrap things of face to face again but it did not happen, nevertheless you can think about it for sure, for next time, this is something I can tell from your work that ah.. seeing what you did here, what a labour of love. I was unfortunate to have a Shinobi X game fall out of the bookshelf before I got a chance to try it, it freezes after the opening motion picture, and that is a bit of a low down because I am so intrigued with that intro. My box and user manual is in top shape so I will see when time is right to get lone disc to put in my set, it is likely that if you never explained to me what was shinobi for real then I would not be aware of these games. If you want to know this MEGA CD disc with more than one game with Revenge put on to it, I had to pre book it, make an order of something that was not in stock, but the price was to think about international currency somewhere around 20-25 Pound Sterling(£) and that is less than just getting the MEGA Drive Cartridge when all things considered I like Columns and Monaco GP too. It is a little frustratingly difficult to play Columns on hand held because I get a inferior over view of what is happening on Screen when I try it speaking of which, control schemes matter, and with Revenge of… there is that dimension to it, one can pick up and be in full control more or less straight away, with is difficult is about when to be strategic with attacks, magic attacks and when to beat it from the scene to avoid hardship, in general terms I would have wanted to try an 8-bit version but I do understand if it is not as fine tuned in terms of level design movement and set up in terms on controls. This is a great video showing som personality and passion that the hobby deserves, I was expecting you were going to give us a wrapping it all up with a face to face encounter this time, but it did not happen. Nevertheless having all this handed to one self when I just woke up, I feel Honoured, Man! Oh this was a long comment again, re written in libre office, because everything disappeared when this shifted over to another episode

I did this over and over between the age of /9 and 12 when I got my Saturn. The last time I did it I must have been about 16. Now when I play I find it so, so difficult! It is still such an amazing game though! Shinobi 3 was not in the same league as far as I'm concerned- the super cool PS2 3D sequels and the DS Shinobi are better in my opinion, but this is still the best of them all!

Also, I have never played the game without doing the infinite shuriken trick by going into the options menu at the title screen, setting the shuriken count to "00", letting the cursor sit on it for a few seconds and the two zeroes will morph into an infinity sign.

Lol I used to love doing a trick by taking out the cartridge and inserting back in then seeing Super Shinobi at the title.

Try Shinobi 3DS, if you haven't already. It seemed to fly under the radar for most people, but it's actually very good.

There's absolutely no doubt in my mind why this game is a classic. I just happen to suck at it! 😅 I might be in the minority here but I much prefer "Shinobi 3: Return of the Ninja master". The gameplay is so much tighter and the graphics are gorgeous! Plus it isn't so brutally difficult 🤣

Actually youre probably in the majority. 3 is a masterpiece thru n thru. Revenge has its moments and I cant deny how significant it was during the early genesis era
