Remembering Walter Gretzky

Millions of hockey fans everywhere are mourning the loss of Walter Gretzky. People loved that man because they could identify with him. He was one of us. He was an ordinary, decent, honest, totally real working man and human being who just happened to have a son who is the ultimate hockey superstar. He had a wonderful wife and family and he never pretended to be anything but who he was. The huge outpouring of sympathy on his passing is testament to the respect and love that so many people had for him. He had a great life and will never be forgotten.

Losing a parent is so hard, and it doesn't matter how old you get, you still have those moments where you wanna reach out and ask your dad for advice or help. My condolences to Wayne and his family and to all the members of the oilers organization that knew and loved him.

I talked to Walter so many times in my life, he was everywhere....he collected sticks for kids at many of the rinks here in the brantford/cambridge area.

A few years ago I saw Walter at macdonalds in brantford and introduced him to my daughter Nicole and son in law Rorie Ebert from Australia. Quick as a flash he smiled, then looked at Rorie and said, "Are you one of their criminals ?". Rorie and I laughed, because Britain sent boat loads to Australia to populate their Con tenant. The last few weeks before you lose a parent aren't easy. It's important to be bedside to comfort them for their last breath as I am sure Wayne was for Wally. When they do go, you miss them. The memories of them is what you are left with.
