Indeed, I always feel Mike Mills' bass work (and his harmonizing backing vocals) on this song is a bit underappreciated. Still, it doesn't really work with the mandolin substituted for a guitar.

It’s amazing how sometimes we just aren’t ready for certain lyrics, tunes or pieces of art until we have lived through various experiences, met different people, felt joys and pains, failed and bled, returned and grew. As a kid I heard this song a lot on the radio and cast it away as irrelevant. How wrong I was. This version particularly pierces into my soul. Cheers REM. Thank you.

Oh life, is bigger It's bigger than you And you are not me The lengths that I will go to The distance in your eyes Oh no I've said too much I set it up That's me in the corner That's me in the spot-light Losing my religion Trying to keep up with you And I don't know if I can do it Oh no I've said too much I haven't said enough I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try Every whisper, of every waking hour I'm choosing my confessions Trying to keep an eye on you Like a hurt, lost and blinded fool, fool Oh no I've said too much I set it up Consider this Consider this, the hint of the century Consider this the slip That brought me to my knees, failed What if all these fantasies come Flailing around Now I've said too much I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try But that was just a dream That was just a dream That's me in the corner That's me in the spot-light Losing my religion Trying to keep up with you And I don't know if I can do it Oh no I've said too much I haven't said enough I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try But that was just a dream Try, cry, fly, try That was just a dream Just a dream Just a dream, dream

I love this quote from Mike Mills about Losing my religion I saw on Rick Beato’s interview with him. “(The) song it's over 5 minutes long it has no chorus and the lead instrument is a mandolin how could it not be a hit…” 😅

This is one of the Best Live Performances of a song I've ever heard of in my life. REM played this song as good, if not better, than the Studio Version. I hear so many Bands play sloppy in Concert, not these guys.

What we hear here friends is something unique, the lyrics speak to us inside, it's the most insane madness I've ever heard and I've seen and heard rock dinosaurs that make me cry, but this song, this music, in the voice of this immortal? I'm paralyzed, I don't know how to explain it, it moves me...12/28/2023 thank you sir..

Written by a person who went to a Catholic school for eight years. I hope it helped those shy kids in the corner. Those who believed until life became real. About growing up beyond what religion and school can teach. Peace to all!! That's me in the corner!!
