Love that the bass is more pronounced in the live versions. The mandolin usually gets the spotlight on this song but that bass line is holding it all together.

Indeed, I always feel Mike Mills' bass work (and his harmonizing backing vocals) on this song is a bit underappreciated. Still, it doesn't really work with the mandolin substituted for a guitar.

It’s amazing how sometimes we just aren’t ready for certain lyrics, tunes or pieces of art until we have lived through various experiences, met different people, felt joys and pains, failed and bled, returned and grew. As a kid I heard this song a lot on the radio and cast it away as irrelevant. How wrong I was. This version particularly pierces into my soul. Cheers REM. Thank you.

Oh my god, I can’t believe how excited the crowd was...!!!!! And boy Michael sure revelled in the excitement. As they begin to play, the crowd erupts and Michael looks over to Mike Mills with a huge grin on face. They certainly gave it their all and the crowd just couldn’t get enough of it. A standout performance from everyone that night, including the audience. It just doesn’t get any better than that. The finest performance ever..!!!!!!!!!

i was stood slightly to the right of centre and about 30 ft from Michael that night........ i have seen ALOT of live music in my time and this was by far the best concert i`ve ever witnessed , i was alone because i`d lost my friends but i didn`t care! i was surrounded by thousands of friends and we were witnessing musical history being made right there and it was beautiful . my god i wish i was 27 again
