Not just that. I wish we had custom arenas in the menu already unlocked at the start so we could beat certain challenges in a time limit or remove the time limit and give infinite health to Spidey and the enemies to enter a flow state of combat without needing to reset after death, just like most of the best hack and slash games or even the Avengers game (which I really like despite what people say).

remembering all of this and it still baffles me how much they doubled down on all of the least interesting bits for 2 (the win button gadgets and powers/the rest of the game that isnt actually a game), while adding "bounce", "directional yank", and, uhhh...to the fundamentals. to be fair, at lot was done with swinging, but it really feels like they palette swapped the whole design philosphy of ratchet and clank, and not just some of the guns, for the combat.

Probably because a lot of the gadgets in one were the same thing just "recolored". Web bomb and electric shock did the same thing by stunning the enemies. Impact web and trip mine are similar both webbing the enemy to a place that's far. In the sequel they streamlined them. Ricochet web (with upgrades) is impact web, web bomb, and electric web (stunning the enemy); upshot is suspension matrix; concussion burst is concussion blast; web grabber is trip mine but can hit multiple targets at once and an upgrade is used like electric shock. Even web shooters with an upgrade work like impact web.

@PeterParkerSpiderMan940 On paper, you'd be more than correct, but the functionality of each gadget in 1 has way more nuanced utility than any of the gadgets in 2. A lot of that is due to their variable effectiveness on certain enemy types, something Spider-Man 2 completely lacks. On paper, web bomb and electric web do the same thing, until you fight against chain gun brutes and realize they're immune to webs, giving electric webs a far more specialized function. On paper, trip mine and impact web do the same thing, until you want to experiment more with environment set up and realize impact webs are quite one-dimensional (yet still useful depending on the position you fire them from). Trip mines offer far more flexibility to combat encounters given that they can be placed and virtual any surface, even moving ones, making their implementation far more inventive and creative for combat use, depending on how you play. In 2, that unique functionality is gone as all gadgets work virtually the same as others against any enemy in the game, the exact same way, except in a weaker or less flexible fashion compared to its predecessor.

@PeterParkerSpiderMan940 In 2, there are no enemy types that are immune to certain gadgets. Only enemies that are more susceptible to certain gadgets, the symbiotes with concussive burst. However, outside of that, there is nearly no incentive to use one gadget over the other in Spider-Man 2 aside from very limited ability synergies and set ups, especially when compared to the first game.

Spider-Man 2 is great in its own right, but doesn't touch the first game in terms of combat imo. The amount of creativity and versatility in the combat are what make it my favorite game of all time, and your videos always do a great job of showcasing that. Keep up the great work, Soni! I look forward to seeing what you guys do with the co op mod!

Yeah I'll say the improved upon aspects of the combat to make it more streamlined but it's sooo streamlined it's kina hard to be as creative as you could in the first game. There's no jank to play with,
