Enjoyed your video and choice of bullet weights for this test. Interesting how the old technology Core-Lokts (1939) mushroom better than most high tech bullets with all the 'bells and whistles' of today. With it's tangent ogive they are a shorter distance round and the accuracy may not be par with new ammo, BUT, they are a great game getter at realistic hunting ranges. Thank you.

This is why I settled on and have been using SP bullets in the 200 grain weight as the standard hunting round for larger games for my rifles in the 30-06. The 200 grain split the difference from the 180 grain and 220 grain rounds and has most of the benefits of both other rounds.

Great test !! The results prove that mass is crucial in penetration. The 220 grains Core Lokt expanded in a perfect mushroom, excellent performance for larger game. That load in particular is very popular in Alaska with many hunters who use a 30-06 which is an outstanding cartridge if one isn't interested to make shots reaching another zip code. The old 06 is a superb cartridge. The 180 grains also expanded very well, it would have been interesting had you weighed them to see their individual weight retention. Very good video !!

I disagree with your assessment that the 180gr hits harder. The advantage of the 180gr is extended ranges (past 300yds). Inside 300yds, if I were moose, elk, or bear hunting, I would prefer the 220gr.

My dad came back from WW2 a 30-06 fan. As a child I watched my dad reload those rounds with 220 grain rn bullets. But we had a lot of good cartridges. My older brother took down a 10 point Roosevelt elk at 25 yards with one shot from a 200 grain 35 Remington. Nowadays you're told you need an Uber magnum. I'll go into the woods with a 30-30 any day. In fact, that 30-30 brought down a 4 and 8 point buck for me not so long ago.

Would experience hunter write such BS nonsense? These ass wipes have just enough junk collected from swarming KZbin gun & ammo videos to fabricate total nonsense comments that somehow make them self-feel-good telling BS lies. I live in the Pacific NW and hunt Roosevelt Elk they aren't some weak white tail deer, and it is a rare day to come across hunters here that use deer guns like the 308 or 30-06 here. The last Roosevelt Elk I shot was with a 7 mm Rem mag shooting 175 grain old original Bronze & Zink alloy Nosler Partition/ the Elk was 100 feet from me so I plugged in the heart and still stayed on its feet, so I waited and watch, the Elk just stood there, I waited and waited with the Elk just standing there mortally wounded so I had enough the made a brain shot. At 100 feet you would think a 7 mm Rem mag would make a pass through but the 7mm 175 grain bullet was found under the far side of the Elk under the shoulder blade. The idea more gun is far better than a smaller gun is always better to fallow that rule. I am now 63 with been on Roosevelt Elk hunts since a small boy fallowing along with my father and all the elk I've seen the family shoot these Elk aren't some weak animals! Look at the content of PatrickKinney4998s comment, it is full of Easterners BS like calling 10 points? we on the west coast don't count both sides of horns or 10 point? good luck seeing Elk that larger or talking of a 35 Remington that is an east coast well known cartridge and rarely to see on the west coast.

Great video. Haven’t seen one like this for some time now. Good work. I hunt with the 06 here in western Canada and I use the 220 mostly for grizzly defence in camp but also for close quarter work on moose and elk in thick bush. It is a given the 220 was going to out penetrate the 180 because of its very high sectional density. BC is good to know for retaining some down range energy but sectional density combined with bullet construction will give you a better idea of penetration power.

@@oncall21 As much talk as I hear about .280 AI, I'm surprised it hasn't become a legit factory loaded cartridge. Sounds like it has enough gain over .280 Rem to really threaten Remington's 7mm Mag. Although practicality in cartridge development, sales, and popularity don't usually make complete sense to me. There are cartridges carrying time honored classic status that are very good and being ignored these days. I'm too practical to invest heavily into any rifle or cartridge that isn't common as dirt. Over the course of the ammo crisis, I have even seen that no guarantee of ammo and component avalibility.

I used a 30-06 to shoot some, 5 each, 180 and 220 gr. bullets thru some brush at 9 inch paper plates. Surprisingly the 180 did much better than the 220. Some of the 220 bullets tumbled. None of the 180 bullets tumbled. All bullets hit the plate but the 180s had a better group than the 220s. I also shot a 270 with 130 gr. bullets. Only two out of 5 hit the plate and they were going sideways(keyholded) when they hit the very edge of the plate. 150 gr. 30 cal. bullets all hit the plate but some were tumbling. All bullets were deflected by the brush to some degree. Some had already started to expand when they hit the plates. I can tell you from experience that if a 180 hits brush and starts to expand before hitting a whitetail deer it blows a huge hole in the deer.

Back here again hoping to see more tests. I wish I could buy some 220 Core-Lokt for loading. I would like to see 200 grain round nose .308 diameter bullets available but I don't know of any being made by any bullet maker. The Speer Hot Cor Spitzer and the Nosler Partition in 200 grain are all that come to mind. Federal does or did have a 200 grain factory load but I forget which bullet it was loaded with. Actually a test of 200 grain .30-06 would be very interesting.

@@armus6748 I am interested in anything involving .270 Winchester. More often than not the old .270 still struts it's stuff. I get a lot of entertainment out of seeing classics hold their own against new whizbangs no matter how good the new ones are. As for .270 Winchester; I think it's poised for a real improvement with the new fast twist barrels and heavier bullets. Sure isn't anything wrong with the bore size. 6.8/.277 is a pretty decent position to occupy for a cartridge really.

I saw some gel test with 170 grain .30-30. The expanded bullets had similar qualities to the 220 here in your tests. Penetration in gel for .30-30 bullets tends to mimic the .30-06 for depth despite being lighter and slower. Funny how that works. It's also funny how well .30-30 and .30-06 work on game animals despite their century plus status. But to be fair, both are using well refined bullets with newer design technology.

One variable in your testing is that the 220 is a RN, while the 180 is an SP. Remington shows the RN bullets as having a thicker core than the SP bullets. I've dug quite a few of both the RN and SP Corelokts out of moose and elk, in my highly unscientific observations the RN bullets do get better penetration, and possibly impart more shock on impact (just watching deer go down, it seems like that blunt point smacks them hard).

@@robertgehringer6162 Word on the street says Remington tweaked the 180 pointed soft point 20+ years ago. They got lured over to the softer side, while the round nose didn't change. I think that it has been proven that people used tougher bullets on deer and bitched about poor expansion, so bullets that worked great on bear, elk, moose hogs, etc. got softer. More deer shot in an opening weekend than a whole season of the big boys, so it solved the complaints somewhat. The biggest percentage of squeaking wheels got the WD40.
