And besides, it's even menioned that Manfred has forged evidence for a long time. It just so happened that Gregory caught him at this trial. So, no matter how you look at it, Manfred is to blame.

pfft, i cried over it multiple times during turnabout goodbyes. one time was when they weren't even TALKING about DL-6, they just showed tiny Miles in the class trial flashback and i teared up because i remembered that DL-6 happened to this kid. i normally find it hard to get emotional from a story but ace attorney made me such a crybaby

Manfred's motive was his penalty dealt by Bansai Ichiyanagi, and he adopted Edgeworth soon after because he knew what would happen if he didn't, which ended up being his demise.

Actually Greggory had beaten Von Karma the day Miles came with him. When Von Karma found them passed out in the elevator after Miles had shot him. He took his act of revenge. Then he morphed Miles into a monster while pretending that everything had to be perfect. Basically abusing the boy along with his daughter Franziska. Manfred took him in only to make sure he didn’t follow through with his dreams.
