This shows how I can remotely control the Kenwood tm-d710 using another radio with DTMF tones. I found the manual a little confusing on how to enable and disable cross band repeat mode over remote control.
Please see this video and comments from Bryan Parke if you have a newer model of this radio concerning the DTMF decoding and answer back functions:

Here is the cheat sheet I made with the codes from the manual and some of the tone values as well:

reading some of the comments! Some people asking how good is the D-700 / D-710 or the D-710G. I bought the D-700 when it entered the market in the year of 2000. That was 19 years ago. This radio was set up in APRS mode in Toronto running 24 hours. Once each year I took it a part and cleaned the dust inside. About 5-6 times I had to replace the cooling fan. Not surprise the fan was constantly turning on and off with each transmission. I had no issues with this radio. This year I sold my D-700 for 200 dollars. The only reason I sold it because my friend of my wanted it badly. He is very happy with this radio (LOOKS LIKE BRAND NEW) About 10 years ago I purchased a D-710 never installed in the car, used it as a base station in a condominium on the 29th floor. My dual band antenna was on the roof at the shore of Lake Ontario. I was allowed to install only one antenna and because of that I had to use a coax switch. One input from the antenna and four out put to four different radios. I had a good chance to test out different radios (WITH THE SAME ANTENNA) My two favorite radio was the Kenwood D-710 and the Icom IC-746. Usually I made the long distance calls over Lake Ontario with the ICOM radio because the 746 is putting out 100W. The returning stations weren't using high power most of the times. I was having problems to hear the weak stations, that was the time to switch the antenna to the Kenwood TM-D710 to receive. The Kenwood radio is much more sensitive than ICOM or ALINCO I purchased an ICOM IC-2820H for it's D-star capability. This radio can't come close to the KENWOOD. Four years ago the D-710 started loosing sensitivity. The receiving filters started going and I had to switch from FM to NFM mode to pick up the weak stations. Soon after the NFM was losing sensitivity as well. I had to make a decision to repair the D-710 for 300 dollars or scrap it and get a new one. Than KZbin UNIVERSITY suggested to replace the four ceramic filters. AAAAWWHAT? Can I do that? I ordered the four filters (5 dollars each) and I replaced the defective filters with a new one. Those filter are better than the new ones. In Canada the TM-D710G cost 700 Dollars. One hour labour and 20 Dollars saved me 700 Dollars. I can't comment on the D710G I don't have one but that is going to be my next mobile. I like the idea to have a built in GPS THANKS KZbin! 73' VA3VAD

Bryan, Can you help me out? I just purchases a new Kenwood TM-D710G I have a list of frequencies I have entered into memory. At some point last night I had VHF showing on the left side and UHF on the right side of the unit. Today I just have 2 meter on both sides. How to I control this? UxU UxV VxV When I enter frequencies do I need to program UHF on the first 100 memory channels and VHF on the memory channels 101 and higher? The manual is good but just not as detailed as I wished it was. Kind regards Jack K.

Hi Jack, no the memory numbers can hold channels for any band. Like I have memory #1 on a 2m channel and memory #2 on 70cm. As far as your other question on having 2m on both sides, I think there is a band button or something that might have been enabled to lock those sides to 2m but I'll have to look that up and get back to you. I typically have my A side scanning through memories 0-100 which includes 2m and 70cm channels, and the B side fixed on APRS 2m. Thanks a lot for watching!

Great video! I have experimented myself and everything works. However, I didn't find a way to setup the shift to +/-/off through the remote operation control. So if you want to setup a repeater, actually the shift is the only one I couldn't find. Anyone any idea what is the code for that? Thank you!
@drtelnet04
@drtelnet04 4 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! I have no idea! The manual doesn't say anything about setting an offset that I could find. I guess I would just have to preprogram the repeater as a memory channel and recall the memory channel number when operating remote. Sorry I don't have any other ideas on that. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting though and let me know if you discover a way to set that!

Cool, but if you can't see the face of the 710, and the settings aren't displayed on the HT, how can you be sure you're getting what you think you're getting? For example, if you fat finger a frequency change, you'll never know it, right?
@drtelnet04
@drtelnet04 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, you're right, if it isn't on the right frequency you won't know it. I would try to transmit on what I think I set it's input frequency to and if it didn't work then I must have set it incorrectly. That's why I saved that revert to a known good state sequence that resets it back to 146.52. That way I can quickly reset it and try it again. I wish the Kenwood would squawk back tones or something on what it received as a command. Thanks for watching!

Sorry I didn't see your comment until just now (KZbin comments are pretty difficult to use) but another person noticed this same behavior and made a video about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJ-ZmZ2qbs6CacU Basically newer versions of this radio did not include some DTMF encoding/decoding chip and aren't able to use that feature. I think that's the menu you're referring to. Sorry I don't have any better information on that, but thanks a lot for watching!
@drtelnet04

Well maybe that menu number isn't related to the video about DTMF that I thought and I see you have the 710GE model, so maybe that's something specific to the European model? Sorry I'm not much help here

Hi Bryan! I just got the TM-D710GA for Christmas, I'm very excited! I had watched your video and it was the clincher between getting this or another radio. I am having an issue, wondering if you know the answer. When I go to Menu, Aux and scroll through, menu numbers 923 and 924 are missing - it skips right over them, it goes 922 to 925. Any ideas? I'm wondering if it is a firmware update or something. If you have any clues, that would be great!
@drtelnet04
@drtelnet04 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! On your question, I don't know why that menu is skipping those numbers. I suspect it's the firmware version of the head-unit but I'll look at my radio here soon and find out the firmware version and comment back. I know the head-unit and the base-unit have different software updates. Thanks again!

Hi @@drtelnet04 , I've been researching this all weekend and found some new information. It appears that newer versions of this radio are being shipped with those options (923 and 924) removed. I found an addendum in my box that reads "For TM-V71A / TM-D710GA, the following functions are unavailable because of the specification changes: Menu No.923/924. Refer to INSTRUCTION MANUAL, page 35." It's funny (not really) because page 35 shows how to use those menu options, which do not exist in my version of the radio. I had suspected the firmware as well, but I confirmed that I'm on the latest (1.00 for the transceiver, 1.02 for the head unit and 1.02 for aprs). I've reached out to Kenwood (nothing back yet) and to Ham Radio Outlet where my wife purchased it. The guys at Ham Radio Outlet want to help me but are in disbelief at the moment. Anyhow, maybe they'll send me an older radio or modify it so that it will have these functions returned, I don't have much hope at this point.

Just a wild guess, but I wonder if the prevalence of cheap devices like the RTL-SDR is making replay attacks for DTMF remote controlled devices so easy that manufacturers are being discouraged from shipping new transceivers that implement that kind of functionality? This video uses an SDR for a difference purpose, but I think you'll get the idea: www.rtl-sdr.com/tag/dtmf-tones/ @@Tacoma75

@drtelnet04

Thanks for commenting! Sorry I'm not quite sure what you mean though. I guess it depends on if your yeasu radio you are connecting to supports the DTMF tones to remotely control it. The operation of the cross band repeat in this video is Kenwood tm-d710 specific. Any radio that can send DTMF tones can operate the 710 in the way that I showed.

Sure as long as the HT you are using to control the Kenwood can send DTMF tones. I think if your HT has a keypad on it, try holding down PTT and one of the buttons to see if it sends the tones. Let me know if it works for you, thanks for watching and commenting!

Operating in cross band with ID off is a violation of the rules. Your mobile is transmitting back to your HT without id. You don't need to hold REV when powering off, only on.

@@drtelnet04 If you use Locked Band Repeat where the TM-D710 is repeating only what your HT transmits then you don't need to have ID on. Your HT listens to the remote repeater directly. The KW mobile is only in use when you are transmitting. But your HT must be capable of TX on one band and RX on the other simultaneously. It's easy to do with a "dual" radio like the TH-D72A. Use the A side to TX and B side to receive.
