At first I was like "this is simply two XY chains" but then I saw how great it was because as a human you can spot these very easily and be very productive! Loved it!

You've done it again, Jako. Great explanation. I looked at some other explanations my search turned up and they all used such convoluted logic they were uninteligible. Most of them only used four linked pairs and only used the end points for eliminations.

12:17 why are those cells red? The green ones i understand. Thx
@SudokuSwami5 жыл бұрын
The two Green Cells cannot contain a 4 or a 5 simply because of the Naked Pairs in the two Columns. But the four Red Cells ALSO cannot contain a 4 or a 5, because they can SEE BOTH a Blue Cell and a Yellow Cell, one of which MUST be a 4 and one of which MUST be a 5. The four Red Cells can all see the Blue Cell in Block 4 and the Yellow Cell in Block 6. Those two Blue and Yellow Cells act like a Naked Pair, even though they do not see each other. This is the Power of Remote Pairs. Please watch that segment again, and listen carefully to what I am saying. You'll get it. Good luck! :-))

I hope this comment stays at the top of the list, so everyone can readily see it. I wish now, that I had mentioned the derivation of the name, "Remote Pairs," in this Tutorial. I guess I thought that it was obvious, but apparently, it was not; at least not completely. So, here is my take on it. Connecting all the Naked Pairs, in such a way that there are four or more identical Bi-Value Cells linked together, results in any two of those Cells, of opposite polarity, i.e., of opposite color, or an A Cell and a B Cell (as described in the Video), acting as an "effective" Naked Pair, even though they do not "see" each other. Cells such as these, are not directly linked, but are rather linked because of the implications of the Chain of Pairs. They are "remotely" linked, and are "remotely" located with respect to each other. Any two Cells in the Chain that CAN see each other, are simply Naked Pairs. And any two Cells in the Chain of opposite polarity, that do NOT see each other, are indeed Remote Pairs.

Thanks Swami for reinforcing that the pairs have to be linked, not some pairs tossed about the puzzle.

If the Pairs are NOT linked, no conclusions can be drawn from them. :-))

Swamiji, I return to comment after a long time :-). Just browsed through these comments and read this. I think what you have written here needs mentioning on the video too. Seeing RPs as XY-chains, and Simple Colouring (Type I), and "effective naked pairs", in my humble opinion, is necessary to reinforce the concept, even though, as you say, one doesn't need to think of RPs as anything other than RPs to get done with a puzzle. But seeing them in those additional/alternative ways both reinforces memory and goes a long way towards building a big picture -- a "unified theory" or a bringng it all together, as it were--in the minds of solvers. What do you think? And apologies if it seems like I'm labouring a point -- or perhaps belabouring it! :-) Take care. Your work is excellent. That's a point I will never tire of labouring!

Remote Pair at 17:29 1. A link is a line connecting two notes together. In a weak link the two notes cannot both be correct at the same time. In a strong link one of the two notes must be correct. 2. Connecting strong and weak links, in an alternating fashion, creates a "chain". Chains must always start and end with strong links. 3. Notice the chain of squares where each square only contains the notes 2 and 3. 4. Case 1: Imagine placing 3 on this end of the chain. Then, these notes cannot be correct. 5. Case 2: Now imagine erasing 3 from that same end of the chain. Again, these notes cannot be correct. 6. In either case these squares cannot contain 2 or 3.

Hello. I looked at 26:52, and in R5C7, there is only a 5 and a 9. So I realized there must be a typo in your message. Upon further inspection, I noticed a Candidate 2 in R7C5, that can see both a Blue Cell and a Yellow Cell, and you are right.....I missed it! That Candidate 2 can be eliminated. I may be the Swami, but I am still only human. Ha ha. Good luck.

Hello Swamiji: You explain (approx 10:40 onwards) how Remote Pairs can be seen as two XY-chains, and yes, I see the logic. Only writing to say that I never thought of them that way. Instead, I always thought of them as 2-ply or 2-strand Simple Colouring of the Colour Trap kind. Do correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's a valid way of looking at RPs too -- at least that's how I've seen them all along! 🙂 I guess the mind tends to fixate on one way of seeing something and avoids alternatives!
@SudokuSwami5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can look at Remote Pairs, as two XY-Chains, two X-Chains, or Simple Coloring. But the whole point of identifying Remote Pairs, is that you DON'T have to think of all that other stuff. It's easier to just think of them, and see them, as Remote Pairs. :-))
@s.b.easwaran75635 жыл бұрын
@@SudokuSwami Exactly, Swamiji. One needn't look at RPs as anything but RPs. I was trying to make the point that, as an alternative/adjucnt way of looking at RPs, I fixed upon 2-ply Simple Colouring, and not XY-chain, and didn't think any further than that.

Regardless of which perspective you use, the results will be the same. So you should simply think of it, the way that is most convenient, and most easily recognizable for you. Good luck!

Swami, I understand the concept behind remote pairs, I have a problem with my cell phone, I can't color the cells. Until I can see the colors in my head I had to come up with a procedure. I use a dry erase marker to highlight the cells. I just solved a puzzle with five connected bi value cells. I would not have solved this puzzle without your help!! Thanks! Richard Vanderpool

Now I have another strategy up my sleeve. Thanks sir. By the way let me guess this strategy is called remote because the eliminated candidate is sometimes remotely positioned from a pair.
@SudokuSwami6 жыл бұрын
The term "Remote Pairs," is derived from the fact that the network of connected Naked Pairs, results in certain pairs of identical Bi-Value Cells (of opposite polarity) that act as "effective" Naked Pairs, even though they do not see each other, i.e., the two Bi-Value Cells are "remotely" located from one another.
