Can you use a dead generators engine for a Go Kart or other purpose, find out what you're up against. Also how to remove the generator Rotor. Then watch me grind the crankshaft down without removing it from the engine: • Tapered Shaft to Strai...
I used a 1/2-13 tap and bolt to remove the rotor. If you don't have taps your can buy a basic sae/metric kit like this one amzn.to/2r2X9fm for pretty cheap or just a single tap amzn.to/2pHVnw2 .
I used a Craftsman Strap wrench to hold the rotor from spinning amzn.to/2r2ug2Y

To remove the rotor, gently tap it with a rubber mallet. You may need to rotate it a few times while you tap it. There is no need to extract it with a bolt.

Most appreciative! I recently picked up a nearly new and pristine Westinghouse 9500 watt for $150. The gamble? According to the previous owner, the engine was locked up and it had sat for two years. The thing had no dust on it. I figured I'd take a flier of a chance at the price and pray for a hydrolock issue. Sadly, the cylinder is fine. It must be the rod/crank in a very strong embrace. I'm guessing it was a power out purchase and someone started it without adding oil. I've got everything off the chassis except the engine and gen head. I ordered a flywheel puller of eBay. For $20, it's not worth the effort to build my own in the shop. I still need to get a M12x1.75 bolt and come up with a shaft to push the rotor off. Once inside, I'll know for sure what the damage entails

It can be done. While the motor is running, I used a grinder then a file and ground the shaft to fit a hydraulic pump and used it for a log splitter just a few years ago.

sixtyfiveford Gen guy here. What ya did works fine. Briggs makes a kit so I can do the home standby ones in the field. But on these little peashooters you have another option. Support that rotor slightly from underneath with a jack and a block of wood (plywood transmits the force nicely) Then take another plywood scrap and put it on top of the rotor. Whack that sucker with a good sized hand sledge hammer and as ya hit it, sorta put a spin or drag across on the hammer. This will work if you are careful and need to reuse it, but the strike will kill the magnetism for sure. No biggie to fix that though. but if it's going to scrap you don't need to be so careful, just support it good.

You can buy a clutch that has a #41 sprocket, with the amount of teeth you want, or a 4L V-belt pulley, that fits the taper shaft. I "think" it is made by Max Torque. The around the $50 to $80 mark. I have bought them in the past, to use on generator engines, that I put on mini bikes. You can find them on eBay too.

As a machinist, no. I wouldn't waste my time cutting that pulley for myself. I've lost count of the number of straight shaft engines I've bought for just a couple bucks and put back into running condition in an hour or less...often without spending any more money. Lots of stupid people in the world throwing out perfectly good engine powered equipment because it won't start or doesn't run right....or it just isn't new and shiny anymore. I have no idea why people keep trying to reinvent the wheel. By the time you get through paying a machine shop, you could have bought an engine...or at least a new crankshaft. Doing it the halfassed way with a handheld grinder/file/whatever ends up with halfassed results, and you will never have a standard crankshaft. In addition, if the engine is used to direct drive a pump(hydraulic or pressure washer) you will very likely beat the keyway out of the shaft and pump bore due to a piss poor fit between the two. This will also ruin the pump.

if you check the parts manual for the engine itself (not the generator) you will find that this engine has 3 part numbers for the crankshaft. They just put the crankshaft in based on what it is used for. They are keyed shaft, taper shaft or gear shaft. They are a little pricey though, and you will then have to change your gaskets after opening the engine. Not sure if its worth it or not. I guess it depends on the shape the engine is in.

My Coleman Devilbiss powerback generator was different . The 4 long bolts only had nuts on one side and threads of not to other side. It may have messed up threads by using a tool to grip threads on the end closest to me that held nuts. And when I put a rod inside and screwed in a boot after creating threads the bolt broke so I had nothing to lose and tapped with a sledge and immediately fell off shaft. I had already tried a rubber mallet. Now I have to go from opposite end and drill an extractor also broke in bolt.

Those tips work just fine. No need to machine it any better, just make sure engine is hard mounted so it wont vibrate, remove bulk with poverty lathe/grinder, put long bolt on the side so you have hand rest and fine tune with file. Measure the diameter often and spray some water into axle every now and then to keep it cool so crank seal wont get damaged. That should be plenty good quality for go cart or other pulley driven system. For variator with larger diameter there might be some vibrations, but probably nothing major if its done accurately enough and with patience so it wont become uneven or oval. If you want bigger and wider axle, yes use the peace from the core, cutting extra off and pulling it into place with bolt, when its grinded to size make couple holes and with wet rag on the saft to keep it and seals cool, couple quick welds to secure it into place just to be sure. Alternatively new bolt should work too if welding is not a option.

I've been servicing this one for a neighbor for years. He's logged 5000-7000 hours on it since 1999+- so I think he got his money's worth. It's definitely been a great unit.

My engine slung a rod and I want to replace engine. How to get engine and gen head to reattach?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford Ай бұрын
@@MC-hs4mf Just tighten the small long bolt down. Doesn't take much. Probably only 30-40 foot pounds. The taper on the shaft locks in super easily.

Great video. Thanks. I have a Generac gn220cc 4000xl portable Generator. I removed the gen from the motor the same way that you did. I noticed the shaft has a keyway slot in it but I never saw a key and when looking down the gen head I don't see where it would have a need for a key. Do you know if I need a key for the shaft that the gen head goes into when I put the gen head? back onto that shaft. Thanks John.

I've never seen a generator require a key. They rely solely on taper compression to lock the rotor to the shaft and ensure it's perfectly centered.

Good video that gets right to the point, no bullsh^tting around like 90% on here do! sixtyfiveford! Right on bud! BTW, when I tapped my rotor for the puller bolt, it was a 7/16-14 NC thread. I'm sure most of these rotors that aren't tapped are probably the same ID. Carry on!

Yes several years ago because the electric motor on the compressor was junk and the generator was junk too.

It can definatley be done especially if you have a lathe which I do. I may just turn down the shaft or I may machine an adapter which seems easier however I have to remove the govenor and I don't remember how much I need to dissemble but it depends on how much work to remove the crankshaft. Mine is a 3/4 tapered to 5/8 I can turn a 1 inch sleeve and press fit it on with a 1/4 inch of material removaed so after it is pressed in I can tig weld the original shaft onto the sleeve and the other half of the part would be solid with a keyway and a tapped hole. Well thats the theory it doesn't seem so hard.

Saw a guy tread the end then fill with water, Teflon tape bolt and it popped right off. If you have to keep it horizontal pump it full off grease if a rod isn't handy and tighten up bolt, similar to how I pop out the input shaft bearing on manual transmissions

I don't think it would be as crude as you might say if you took times patience and use proper tooling. I'm in the same dilemma I'm glad your video explains how to get this rotor off, I was going to use the 10 horsepower Subaru engine for a mini bike

My Idea would be to make a fixture to hold a lathe bit .....or a tool post grinder .and machine the shaft with the engine running
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 7 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing last night. There are always 4 bolt holes on the back of the motor that would support a fixture.

@@sixtyfiveford Gotcha, thats awesome! I have a 19hp B&S 570cc twin that I just pulled off a generator a few minutes ago after watching your vid, and you're right it runs and is self contained. I was worried I was going to have to buy a separate stator and cdi,so this is good news. I'm building a snow bike with it with a snowmobile CVT. Thanks for the vid!

The cvt clutch from a golf cart or gator engine also uses a tapered shaft. Not sure about the taper lengths for a easy fit.. another consideration. Is tractor supply outlets have all kinds of shaft adapters , sprockets, pulleys. Ect. So even if the shaft needs to be larger than a go karts 3/4" u can Adapt to a farm sprocket. Then use a piece of 3'4" keyed shaft with a pair of bearings and mounts. To make a jack shaft with another sprocket to work with the motor on One end and kart clutch on the other.. ..
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 жыл бұрын
Those tapered shafts on golf carts etc are a completely different taper. Generators have a unique taper style though you can buy adapters, They will run your $75-100+ which generally defeat the purpose of using a second hand engine.

One thing thats not mentioned is that the output shaft from the Old gas Motor has to have either the Bearing & Housing off the old gas Motor "OR" a Block Bearing so that the Generator Armature can stay exactly inline > I have used the whole crankshaft with the Gas motor housing to insure the Generator Stays perfectly straight as it was when still attached to the Old Gas Motor . Thanks for the Video !!
