Great video. I need to replace at least one of my glow plugs (though after this video I’ll probably replace all of them!!). There isn’t much information on the Promaster diesel on KZbin. I had to replace my alternator. Anything I saw talked about removing the motor mounts and lifting the engine. I lucked out and found that by releasing the rubber bands on the exhaust, I could slide the alternator half way down (to the slider door) it would slip out with just a little pressure on the exhaust pipe. That took 5 mins compared to I don’t know how long, to Jack the engine up! I just subscribed. Thank you for taking the time to post your video.

Hi Dan, this is a great video thank you very much, I can’t find enough video about 3.0L, I4 engine. I couldn’t make any comment on your other video which is 360 view of the entire engine. My question is if the transmission removal is easy to do on my on. I can see the transmission case on the right side of the engine. Is it reachable without pulling off the engine? Thanks

Is this a pretty common problem? Just bought one and needs glow plugs. Going to replace them here in a week or so. Also how often do you put DEF fluid in or did you do an EGR blocker at all?

My def light comes on about every 5 fill ups or so.

Were you able to get them all out without any of them breaking? And if so what was the procedure you used before you removed them, as far as warming the vehicle up to a certain temperature, using a penetrating lubricant etc? Thanks

On a cold engine, spray the glow plugs with penetrating oil, or PB Blast, for at least a couple of hours prior to removal of the glow plugs. Gradually loosen the glow plugs. If you begin to experience any resistance switch the ratchet to tighten, and slowly tighten the glow plug a turn or two. Then switch the ratchet back to loosen and recommence removal of glow plug slowly. This method of gradually alternating from loosening to tightening a few turns and back to loosening is among the most effective methods to remove corroded glow plugs, and rusty bolts in general. Importantly, remember to soak the glow plugs with penetrating oil spray, or PB Blast, at least a couple of hours prior to removal.

@@dannog257 thanks for replying! So I need to remove them with the engine cold? The dealership tried telling me they have a certain engine temperature they need it to be before they try removing it, but also said it's a 50/50 chance it would still break lol. I think I'll try it your way. You're the only person I've seen or heard of, online, that has done this successfully. What can I do if it does break? Thanks

Thank you for your support. Please, proceed with extreme caution, patience, and attention when performing this procedure. There is a known TSB on the first generation Ram Promaster, (same as third generation Fiat Ducato), that references water leaking into the engine compartment from the cowl panel. It is recommended to apply a bead of weatherproof seam sealer, or silicone, where the cowl meets the windshield, and in the center of the cowl where the two panels meet, in order to stop, and prevent, water entering the engine compartment. This is relevant with respect to this procedure because that water leak is the principal cause of rust and corrosion on glow plugs, injectors, and bolts on Ram Promasters. I’m sure your dealer knows this, and that’s why they made that comment, (“50/50 chance”). If the glow plug does break, God forbid, only two options exist. The first option is to drill it out. This is a skill that is honed only with years of experience, steady hands, and a few F-bombs along the way. The second is to remove the cylinder head and send it to the machine shop. At that point, glow plug R&R becomes top-end overhaul. Incidentally, I have another Promaster that is being sent to me in the weeks to come from Texas. That particular Promaster will require a top-end overhaul. I will make sure to document the process, especially now that it is at the forefront of my mind because of this discussion. Also, I have attached a copy of the Star Case from FCA for reference, (link at the bottom of this response). Please, feel free to drop any comments and suggestions. Thank you again for your support, viewership, and subscription to my humble channel. Best. home.roadtreking.ca/Manuals/FBgroup/Ram%20Promaster%20Cowling%20Leak%20TSB.pdf

@@dannog257 thank you so much man, I really appreciate the response! I look forward to seeing the process of the work you perform on the top-end job you have planned! I'm going to hold off on attempting to remove the gloe plug until I see what I might encounter if it happens to break. Thanks again!!

Ummmmm... Small detail you leave off in your video! BEWARE PEOPLE! Everyone notice the Throttle Body and Chamber have been REMOVED (not mentioned)-- a major job to remove...You can clearly see it has been removed in the video-- (it is the open chamber he sprays out with the cleaning spray-- good view of the open chamber at 3:55...notice how much space he has now that all those things not mentioned are gone? LOL). Without removing all of the wires, The Throttle Body and Aluminum Cover, you CANNOT get to the #2 and #3 Plugs. What kind of joke is being played with this video I do not know--- Just BEWARE, it is a MUCH BIGGER JOB than this guy makes it look!
