To anyone who stumbles on this “tutorial”: Do not stand on the countertop. It’s not intended to support weight like that and can break. Don’t use a hammer or mallet. The energy transfer from the hammering can break the mirror. Try gently prying with a crowbar between the mirror and the shims. And yeah… wear freaking gloves, glasses, long sleeves, shoes etc.

Step one, Tell your wife to get off the counter in case it breaks. Step two, put on some pants and long sleeve shirt in case it breaks. Step three, and most importantly, PUT ON SHOES! Step four, put the hammer up. Never use a hammer on a mirror. Not even a rubber mallet.

I would place a piece of plywood in front of the mirror while prying it off just in case it does crack, that way it doesn't drop on you.
