For rust removal, white vinegar is exactly the same as cider vinegar. Acidic acid 5% is the actual part that helps loosen oxidation. White vinegar is made directly from distilled alcohol where cider vinegar is made from apple cider that has been fermented to produce the alcohol that will become acetic acid. Taste is different but rust don't care about taste!😀

FYI, What I think works best is, go to your local aquarium supply store and get a bag or two of aquarium gravel, it's very small and sharp. Put the gravel in the tank to clean with some water to make a slurry, slosh it around and it will clean the interior of your tank, make it like new.

Brilliant! I have a 2009 Subaru SP170 engine powering a RIDGID 3000 psi pressure washer. A year ago I left some pump gas in the tank, and voila'...when I got it back out again, the engine's tank & carb were leaking. Looking into the tank I found that it rusted to a pretty shade of orange...and crap got down into the carb. So I am going to try your brilliant technique using gravel AND the apple cider vinegar techniques on the engine and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for the great idea!

I use a handful of copper coated BB's to agitate the rust. Can easily dump them out or use a magnet to remove them.

I had no hope for a gas tank the exact same one you have because there was 30 year old gas in it and there was half a centimetre of rust lining the tank. I didn’t think it was saveable but thanks to you it was

Trick I learned from grandpa on the farm years ago... If you have a bad case, fill the tank about 1/3 full of small rocks and some lubricant like a cup or two of diesel, strap or tie the tank to the inside of your tractor (or even lawn mower) wheel, and mow drive around for a bit. You can achieve the same thing if you have a cement mixer around to do the tumbling for you at low RPM. Just be careful that you don't have anything inside the tank like pickup tubes or anything like that and remove them first if you do.

I use 2-cycle gas to coat the inside of de-rusted tanks. I do this with the tank off where it can be shaken and turned upside down. I also use double the 2 cycle oil with the gas. I use about a pint in my generator tank if it's going to be empty for more than a month. The engine fill fire right up months later. During hurricane season I keep non-ethanol stabilized gas in both generators and keep the tanks full. The ethanol will attract the Louisiana humidity and water will end up on the bottom of the tank. Keeping the tanks full is a practice that I've started year round, but requires that you start the equipment on a regular basis and to use ethanol free stabilized fuel.

Great video. Slightly more aggressive than vinegar,toilet bowl cleaners with the active ingredient being hydrochloric acid (don't use the bleach type) will really help to save time. The Works or Lysol 10X gel. Can be cut down with water if an overnight treatment is necessary. Ratio being 1:1

I have a vibrating pot for knocking the rust off parts and nuts & bolts. I put some of that media in my tank, then duct taped it to the pot. Turned it on and ran it that way for a while. You can also tape items to your vibrating sander in a vise to agitate them.

I use the sand blasting sand from Home Depot mixed with CLR to polish out the inside and remove the rust, I shake the tank around for a while. I do the same thing again without the CLR added untill it looks dry then wash the tank out with vinegar until it looks clear. I use tank sealer after to seal inside of tank, shake tank, the sealer coats inside of tank and eventually all the liquid sealer will form a seal so the liquid left over should be little drain what's left then dry like instructions say.

I use airplane gas in my snowblowers due to the little use they get. Started using it in my tiller and weed trimmer too. I also park my motorcycles and garden tractor with a full tank of airplane fuel as well. No ethanol in that gas and airplane fuel has to be clean. After all, you can’t pull over if the carb gives you problems in the sky.

Learned a few good tips from you my friend Thank You for sharing one thing you said about China rubber i learned the hard way ............ For anyone buying fuel line/fan belts /(even) rubber bands spend a little extra look for Made In USA because China builds most things with little concern for longevity/safety/ or quality which can be costly and deadly .....china 1/4 fuel line rots after 3 years on a new generator from home depot building center dripping gas on a hot engine hello ( fire) so be aware .....

You tried muriatic acid? Only works with steel tanks because itll eat up aluminum. But i think you just pour a cup or so and put on gloves, glasses, mask and cover the skin and give her a shake for no more than a few minutes and dump baking soda in to neutralize then water hose..

I buy 5 gal of AVgas LL100 every year for small equip, including chainsaws...add a double dose of stabil or equivalent. The gas is about 6 bucks a gallon but I havent had any springtome starting probs and definitely no water in the gas.....its well worth the trip to the airport.. I use the last 4 of my social prefixed by an N...for the tail number of my airplane that only needs 5 gallons to fly....
@TheGoatMumbler6 жыл бұрын
Yep. The gas you get these days suck! You have to buy premium to run in your weed wacker and don't mix up too much because it won't store for very long. The scam that is ethanol is killing all the crap Chinese made rubber o rings, washers, etc in these small engines.

I use lacquer thinner for jelled gas (takes 30 minutes) and electrolysis on rusty STEEL fuel tanks. Been a professional mechanic for close to 50 years so I go with what works..... I don't believe I could look a customer in the eye if I had to tell them I was billing them for cleaning their fuel tank with gravel from the driveway.
