@Greg-jn8cc3 жыл бұрын
As stated, Australia is free of rabies and any animals coming from a known rabies area have to go into quarantine for a period. It's why Johnnie Depp and Amber Heard got into trouble over their two dogs. They came from a rabies area and tried to sneak their dogs in without going through the quarantine procedure. If rabies got in here it would be devastating to our wild life and our economy. Depp and Heard were whinging about it on US television, but they were very lucky that the Deputy Prime Minister allowed them to get them back out of the country. In normal circumstances they would have been destroyed.

@@kaalamp Not allowed to kill native wildlife in Australia. In most states, you're not even allow to take them more than 50 m (165') from where you trap them before releasing them. They are an introduced pest in New Zealand, though, and killing them is considered a civic duty there. I don't think they eat too many of them (a lot of possums are killed by poisoning, and meat hunters prefer to target the pigs and deer in the bush), but the pelts and fur are often put to use.

@DallasMike4247 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Wallace. When I see a nasty critter or insect that I don’t recognize, I should automatically assume it’s from Australia. Nature doesn’t really give you a break, does it? North American possums are the only marsupials we have and it is my understanding that they are descended from marsupials that existed back when North America, Australia, and Antarctica formed a supercontinent named Rodinia. Possums in the US have a prehensile tail that looks like it belongs on a rat. They hiss and bare their teeth when confronted but rarely bite. Blessings to you.
@Greg-jn8cc3 жыл бұрын
Actually Dallas Mike, our wildlife is really very cute. With the possible exception of the Crocs and the odd snake. Unless necessary though we usually don't get up close and personal with them as most wild life do like their bit of space. But I think I would get a bit cranky if I was grabbed by the tail and shoved in a cage. Unfortunately our possums like to get inside and as this video demonstrates, this is the best way to remove them without harming them. Welders gloves are the best. But they do kick up a fuss.
