Being very real with you, in the real world bringing up anything from more than 5 years ago (that’s not a crime) is considered petty and is largely dismissed and rightfully so, and having a platform shouldn’t change that. Accountability is not the same as Cancel Culture and there is no justification for mass online hate mobs. Being inconsiderate and offending ppl by proxy when not addressing them directly isn’t a crime, nor is it in anyway hurting someone’s proportionate to ruining someone’s livelihood... The entire point of anything being “justice” is appropriate and proportional consequences... What we have instead is hurt people, hurting people...

I get where you're coming from and occasionally it's true, but any snapshot of the current social landscape will tell you that's not longer true or assured, if it ever was. People are getting "cancelled" left and right for things they did, and a lot of it really is from years, sometimes tens of years in the past. That's to say nothing of whether or not the cancelling is justified but I think you see my point. It's not safe to assume if you did something offensive and/or hurtful that just because it was over 5 years ago gives you blanket immunity or even partial protection from critcism or straight up cancelation.

@@Hallowed_Ground I was going to point out the same thing. I think it's absolutely ridiculous. Canceling people for things they did years ago where it was fine back then in my opinion causes censorship either by the hosting platform or by the creators out of fear. The other side of this is taking away people's freedom to decide not to support people even if it's for BS reasons. I can't get a solid opinion on this because both directions I see here are a very slippery slope and it sucks.

Serious question. If something wasn't wrong when you said it why would there be a need to apologize for it now? For instance let's say that years from now it'll be a social sin to feed homeless people. however, your back catalogue shows tons of instances with you feeding homeless people. Back when you did it you actually believed you were doing something good. Would you have to apologize for that? Would your apology simply be a way to appease the outrage? Wouldn't that make it a shallow apology? To be perfectly honest I think the majority of cancel culture is arbitrary. I think they're just looking for reasons to be offended. What ever happened to the rule, you can't please everyone.

@Forza Horizon 4 Gamer Mine is that even if you changed and said I'm sorry, soon it will resurface again and you will have to beg again to a totally new audience, and because it resurfaced again, anyone not in the loop might catch it again as if was something new, and this time is worse because more people are jaded against you, then a third time again until you have to cancel yourself.
@jfolz
@jfolz 4 жыл бұрын
The outrage can lack some nuance, but let's be real: you have no idea who the creators you follow actually are. And one way people change if they're in the business long enough is that they wise up. You only know what they allow you to know. Those early "edgy" years are probably the closest you can get to their actual personality. As far as I can tell a "cancellation" is mostly temporary. Even people whose "cancellation" blew up so much that mainstream media reported about it just bounce back after a while. But maybe I just don't know the right examples. Most of the drama seems to be happening outside of my bubble. Searching around a bit it seems to be a result of fierce competition among KZbinrs or certifiably actual questionable behavior. Unless you fix humans or remove competition from the platform "cancel culture" will not go away.

I don't remember what the wording was, but it was worded as if only one political side could be capable of spreading misinformation. I suspect they pulled it because they realized how that could bite them so hard considering how often mainstream media goofed in 2020. And people forget that anti vaxxers are very much a bipartisan problem.
@Shyvorix
@Shyvorix 4 жыл бұрын
@@awesomeferret I agree with the antivax issue being bipartisan, though yea its far reaching to say only one side does misinformation (though I guess you can argue 2 side does disinformation more on average? But that would require so much research (dozens of hours) that the effort to do such stuff would be monumental unless archiving was done on the fly. Everyone is capable of lying. Everyone lies. The question is who is doing it the most, and why. (is it for personal gain? Or simply a case of ignorance? Was it accidental, or 100%.intentional?) Its not often that you get insight into who a content creator really is, but seeing Linus' face after he finished recounting the trouble he has had on social media, you can really see that he is just a good guy. All he wants to do is make good content support his family and employees and that in my own opinion the most sinister face to cancel culture is that you have such a good hearted person like Linus that now needs to worry him self with what he filmed ages ago because people cant see the person for who they really are. you probably will never read this Linus but I hope that you keep doing what you are doing. It's not so much about Phil changing as it is *the channel the brand, the company*. If you're trying to form partnerships you want them to focus on the last three years. 15+ years of history just invites a muddy and unfocused conversation that doesn't contribute anything. I don't really know that the PDS stuff is so much a conversation about cancel culture as it is having built up enough content as this new corporate entity to be able to clear everything beforehand and maintain a more cohesive brand.

I like this guy! I am 17 so I have a lot of friends of my age group, and as much as I agree, I would like to say that it is a VERY loud minority (at least in Central FL) that align themselves with political correctness warriors. Some of them, who just repeat everything they read in the internet (which, if I am honest, seems pretty biased to me) do blindly follow those sorts of people, but any of my friends with eyes to see and ears to hear don’t. Unfortunately, those things are becoming less commonplace.

I agree with a lot of the other comments. Your content is largely educational and provides a history of technology. Deleting it all due to a couple comments that may be "edgy" or no longer socially up to date would be harmful in its own way. Keeping the content as a historical log outweighs the idea of saving face in my opinion. That being said, the decision is ultimately up to those at LTT. Keep up the amazing work!

There’s no winning in cancel culture, the only way to “win” is to not care. Even then a sponsor could care and drop you anyways, you could loose friends/connections too. Also I get why someone would want to delete content that could cancel them as it can effect your career quite a bit unfortunately. The problem is there’s no way to prove you’ve changed/grown to these people. You delete content it looks suspicious and if someone has it saved it’s going to blow up, you leave it up and people will jump on the smallest thing you do currently and point to the past as back up. There’s no way to stop or change these peoples thinking, if they see you as bad that’s what you will always be.

The thing is you're back catalogue is the gateway to which many people find you. I can only speak of my own experiences. But I found this channel when looking for a guide to mounting an SSD. And the first guide that came up was one of Linus' 2013 videos. I wouldn't have found this channel and enjoyed its content without that back catalogue. I think there's also an argument that we shouldn't be deleting the history of internet video content. Particularly as so much of this content was taste making and boundary pushing in the old days. And serves as an important lesson, of what user-generated video content was like back then, where the Innovations came from, and what people were talking about in those days. I still think the nuking of Machinima was a cultural crime! A digital bonfire of the vanities!

Ultimately it comes down to being sponsor independent; if you can afford to lose you sponsors then don't purge anything, stand by your older content (or apologize for it if you don't stand by it), if you can't afford to run the risk of losing sponsors then purge away. But moving forward I think it's important for all creators to put themselves in a position via direct payment from users so that they can't be canceled by pressure from a vocal minority.

One thing I will point out is when Linus talks about "intent doesn't seem to matter" is that it never has. We don't judge people by their intent because we can't know that we judge people by their actions because that's all we had to go on. Whilst I'll agree that we do need to engage with these issues more charitably we can't judge people by what we think their intent was. Intent is how we view ourselves no one else can see that and we cant trust our intent to tell us if we are doing good or bad actions. Id hazard a guess that for the vast majority of the men who get caught up in sexual scandals, they don't have particularly nefarious thoughts but their actions are very much nefarious. Ideas such as getting a girl drunk doing everything you can to convince her to come back to your place to "watch a movie" all of which serve to put a girl in a position where it's hard to say no. But that's not the though process in the man's mind they're just doing what "works". It's hard man

We used to have comedians who were there to challenge society and breakdown stereotypes/biases.. now, they get jailed for “hate speech!” Let’s cancel how society is trending and get back to actual constructive discussions/conversations. Anything you put onto the web has the potential to offend someone. Culture varies so much across the world it's almost impossible to do anything that is interesting, informative, or funny without offending someone. The goal posts will constantly change more the more people succeed in their personal quests to remove content they find offensive. I feel as long as you are not inciting hatred or wilfully trying to influence other peoples judgements against other parts of the community, then people should regulate what they want to watch themselves. They don't have to subscribe or watch.
