There are several ways to remove a one and a two rod implant. This video shows the longitudinal and the perpendicular approaches as well as the modified U method for rods that are more difficult to remove. The best approach causes the least trauma to the woman’s arm.

I got mine removed about a week ago. My doctor is extremely good at Nexplanon. It took about 3-5 minutes from the numbing medicine to him wrapping me up. It is uncomfortable, but when it is done right it is not painful. I had way to many issues being on it though , so I have no intention of ever getting another rod in my arm

Some women stop having monthly bleeding when using implants, and this is not harmful. There is no need to lose blood every month; blood is not building up inside her.

Leaving the implants in place beyond their effective lifespan is not dangerous, but as the hormone levels in the implants drop, they become less and less effective.

A skilled health worker will know how to remove the implant in it’s entirety and should measure it to be sure the whole rod is removed. If a piece is left behind, which is very unlikely -- they will need to remove the little piece. If an implant stays in beyond it’s expiration date, it will simply run out of hormones and not be effective at preventing pregnancy. Eventually it will simply be a plastic rod.

ohh.. i'm sorry for you. It does sometimes happen that the implant is inserted too deeply and then is more challenging to remove. But less and less, as providers get more experience with inserting (and removing) implants.

The modified U technique is meant to be used only for difficult removals -- where the implant is quite deep and cannot come out easily with the other 2 approaches. There is more manipulation of the soft tissue but I believe it heals well.

The provider will give a local anesthetic to numb the area before they remove the implant. It should not be painful.

A little lidocaine, or numbing medicine, is injected where the provider will make her incision to remove the implant(s). Once the place is numb, removal is generally not painful.

In general, you should feel completely normal after getting your implant taken out. Your arm may feel tender or swollen and maybe a little bruised where the implant was for a few days. Any side effects that you may have had while on the implant will eventually go away after it's out and your monthly bleeding will go back to how it was before you got the implant.

The protection gradually drops off but it would be wise to use some form of contraception now if you don't want to get pregnant.

no side effect. After they lose their effectiveness against pregnancy, they are just small plastic rods. they are not dangerous -- but the woman should be aware they will not continue to prevent pregnancy after their expiration date.

I left mine in for nearly a year after expiry & just got it removed yesterday... the procedure took 7 seconds and I felt nothing :)

The provider closes the incision with an adhesive bandage. Stitches are not needed.
