Here's an easy way to remove gold fingers from RAM. Slot Cards & LCD Finger Strip Boards.
please discuss & share your ideas on how we can use a soldering iron to help with gold recovery better, remember we are all learning and any new ideas will help everyone in becoming better at refining and recovering precious metals from out e-waste.

Thank you Ban! Just getting into e-waste side of scrapping. I am starting with silver contacts out of all the switches from the appliances i get for scrap. I don't know if I am going to make any money scrapping gold and silver, but I am having fun and that's the whole point. Gotta go now, going to pick up a free aluminium boat.

Just one question, Ben. How many watts power has your soldering iron? Thanks.
@eWasteBen

it was 30w, I tried with a 40w but it seemed a little too hot inside, but outside I think 40w would be best because of wind cooling the tip.

I like what you do good hobby to stay busy I enjoy your videos. Not only that you can be a bit funny my wife hates me laughing sometimes looking into my phone. You have it a lot easier with the way people dump trash on the side of the curb over in the United States in Jersey City New Jersey people use trash cans and bags to dump the trash in so it's a quite that hard to find cell phones old phones and other stuff that contain precious metals so it's not like we can go through every bag just to see if by any chance of something good in it like I said you have a little better over there I enjoy watching you my name is Joe keep up the good work. And bless us all.

Great tip as another method! I'm glad you mentioned the separating of the recovered material. For those who would have the bad luck of the soldering tip finding it's way to your fingers *ouch*... some sort of holding apparatus or affixed block would be helpful, also possibly a little faster, since you won't be worried about your fingers getting burned.

I was just wondering tho, what sort of temperature should the soldering iron be at? Can you vary the temp on a s.i.? Would be really grateful for some info in this. Fantastic vid btw. Wow Ben another awesome video. You could get a cheap oxygen and map gas torch and melt those unrefined gold foils into a small nugget. It would be 10k or 14k gold but could be sold to a jewelry store or kept as a nice homemade nugget. I was trying to refine gold to 24k but it was too much work for me and too dangerous for me. I sold $1000 US dollars worth of unrefined gold to a jewelry store and put the rest of the nuggets into a safe deposit box. Your new process has gotten me excited to dig out all of my ram sticks and see how much of a nugget I can make in one rainy day worth of work.

Coincidentally I had a friend stop by today on his way to do exactly that, sell his gold blobs to a dealer in town, I was impressed with how they looked but I would of kept them if they were mine. so I take it if I melted the foils they would be similar in karat, say 10-14k, but if I melted the pins from the cpu's that would be considered gold drop and not something a jewelry store would buy?
@quagmier3
@quagmier3 8 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly at least the ones I go to. They sell the ingots made from melted pins on Ebay but the gold percentage at that point it is so low that I look at that as sort of a scam. And also if when you are melting the foils some of the copper will burn off with a blueish green flame if exposed to any oxygen. This will make it more pure but hard to get all of the copper to burn off.
@LuisRodriguez-xf9lv
@LuisRodriguez-xf9lv 8 жыл бұрын
interesting, I have the same idea I will put that material in a small batch of AP (less dangerous) and get more clean and closer to 14k that is considerated a piece of jewelry. melt in a crucible with your favorite shape. i like the mini ingot or maybe a coin size.
@eWasteBen
@eWasteBen 8 жыл бұрын
yeah, I think for many it's the way to go, the same 14k blob could be turned into 24k but it really won't be much different in value because it will be much smaller, so selling as 14k or even 10k kinda works out the same, except no mney is spent on chemicals and much safer.

Hi Ben very interesting idea. I was thinking if a 45 to 60 watt and a little wider iron sharped like you did will remove easier the large fingers from cards and more area with the processors. and maybe if you try to screw a piece of wood or aluminum on the desk and put the processor against the force direction to remain it still on place. keep coming those new efficient ideas. regards Luis.

Excellent video Ben! I have several pins waiting to process. What is your recommendation for processing the pins?
@eWasteBen
@eWasteBen 8 жыл бұрын
thanks! i'm only up to processing the foils, in the simplest of ways. for pins you can't avoid the chemical process to remove the gold foils and i'm just not experienced enough to give advice, so all i can say is, keep stacking them up or send them to someone that refines. 50/50 nitric acid & water does the job to get them to foil stage.
@eWasteBen

But new technologies, like concentrated vinegar solution is not far away from being available to the public, wgen this happens gold recovery will be safe and simple for everyone, so just keep stacking it up

Hey that is real slick. my problem is i already clipped the fingers off. Thanks Ben good video Ben. Kinda curious over how the crushing went with tumbler. i've tried using the air hammer to crush them, didn't work that well but broke 'em up into smaller bits. yeah a cement mixer might be the only logical way, bowling balls would be funny but I can see how that would work

@eWasteBen
@eWasteBen 8 жыл бұрын
foils are the easiest because you don't need chemicals, just melt down into a blob an sell as is because it should be around 14kt. pins need chemicals to remove the gold off the pins first.

A 1500 watt heat gun does not use much electricity at all. Where I live (Tennessee Valley) electricity is billed at 11 cents per kilowatt hour. That means I could run a heat gun at full blast for an entire DAY and it would only cost around $4.00 total. That's running the heat gun 24 hours straight. I'd imagine I could remove a lot more pins than you could... I guess you have to find the right balance. If you are doing 500 chips you might say "screw it" and hit 'em with the heat gun and use sulfuric to kill the solder, whereas if you only had 10 chips the soldering iron might be the way to go.
