I think he uses the little tool to give the watchers some suspense. Like that little ASMR feeling you get when trying over and over to pull a splinter or picking a scab. ...almost got it... ah... finally got it. If he used a real rake... no suspense, no views.

Try putting a rake through the grate grids like he did. He was using the perfect tool for the situation. When *you* clean the blockages you find, use the tool you want. You do clear the blockages you see, don't you?
