Removing these 4 year old trees from the street has been heartbreaking. However the newly planted Crape Myrtles look nice along the sidewalks and streets. The developers made a mistake or the rules have been changed. Not sure which one! The developers of the neighborhood want to turn over the streets to the DOT and the trees were not approved. The DOT stated that during maturity of the trees the root system will get 3X larger than it’s canopy. I am a little disappointed they had to do this during the hottest part of the summer. I hope this video helps everyone who takes care of a new tree planted in the heat of the summer.

I'm surprised they're replacing them with crepe myrtles. Here in Virginia Beach (not too far from you), developers originally planted the dreaded bradford pears. As those decay and fall apart, the city is replacing them with some kind of linden or elm; refuse to plant crepe myrtles as they are weak and prone to crack/breaking near the oceanfront winds/weather. I hope yours do well. I do love the light lilac ones.

It will be gorgeous when all bloom! They are messy though. So sad to have the mature ones cut down.

Kim, taking down a tree is hard and I understand you not wanting to. If you drive through a neighborhood with mature oak tress and see the damage from an oak you will appreciate the removal. It would be smart for home developers and horticulturalist to work together in determining which tress and landscaping would be best in a neighborhood with housed build close. Oak trees need to be on a large property where they can spread out. It is not fair to a customer to place an oak tree in a yard where in 20 years the root system will begin to damage the sidewalks, driveways, underground sprinklers, etc. our neighborhood require them and I hate it but I got approval to remove mine. I planted a Crape Myrtle as well. I prefer a tree that will not cause as much damage. I like the Crape Myrtle.
