This is how I removed the old silicone from my RV to recalk and waterproof the joints and cracks to make it watertight

Acry Solvent makes removing the old silicone sealants a breeze. Try it, you will be soooo happy. Also wipe it down with acetone and the denatured alcohol to remove to old oils in the surface so the new sealant stick well.

what did you use the bathtub cleaner for?

Be careful with Acetone.....it ruins most paints!

Wd40 takes silicone off well too. But you need to clean it of with dawn very very well after or the new silicone won't stick.

Incredible! I dont know why every video shows people scraping it off dry. This is extremely helpful.

that doesn't look like chaulking. that looks like 3M 94 adhesive promoter. its used in spots like that to help a vehicle wrap stick better. When the wrap is removed the residue will stay in the areas that had the adhesive promoter on it. Looks like it was applied with small brush which is common. my guess is that RV had a wrap on it at one time

No...it was silicone base calking that appears drunks or kids had used and colored way outside the lines. Some original calk was removed by the brush. It was a soft brush.

Thanks , if you use toluene in an enclosed area wear a respirator.

Huge help! I thought I'd have to hack at it with plastic razor blades. Many people think that silicone is a wonder sealant that will last forever. It does last forever, it just doesn't stick to whatever you want to make waterproof forever. Talk to house painters and glaziers before using silicone, please.

3M adhesive cleaner will take it right off without harm.

I watched on KZbin a guy got it all off real easy without paint loss. Looked for his video for myself but can’t find it but after watching you I would just add some water to it might a bit harder but you don’t lose paint. Thanks for sharing Ray K UK YNWA.

Why on earth would you use a pressure washer on areas that you just took all the sealer off of? The water is going to go right in where you just took the sealer off.

Did I? I don't remember that.

Hey there seems to be many ways to do this . I’m all for finding ways to make it easy. I bought mineral spirits. Petroleum based- I didn’t think about that that doesn’t sound like the right stuff to use on my sidewalls’ Filon and fiberglass though. ***IS IT ??**** Seeing this I then wondered about the turpentine ( it’s not petroleum and it’s stronger) . Silicone is a bear to get off - I’ve watched so many KZbin’s and everybody seems to be the Expert.

You got to get it off as soon as the job is done and do small sections at the time. People seem to miss this. Clean the area immediately with something like scrubbing bubbles

Ive experienced how new silicone will not adhere and seal to old and have avoided it like the plague since then. Which type of caulk can you remove with mineral spirits and elbow grease? Mainly the top stained layer when using white? And also allow you to apply it over itself and be water tight? Thanks

It has worked perfectly for 3 years.

It's fine... it only came off a little bit on the aluminum. Didn't you see me immediately clean it off with the foam?

Yeah... but everyone is freaked saying that would take the paint off but I think they skipped the part about removing the cleaner immediately after removing the old calking. This is two years later with no signs of paint damage.

Wire brush and chemicals that can dull or damage the paint? Oh Hell No!
@Terryblount4 жыл бұрын
Leave the old nasty calk on there then. Maybe you didn't see the part about cleaning off the chemicals immediately after they dissolved the old silicone.

WD40 does a good job too a tad less harmful on the paint.

He's thrashing that RV with the solvent and the small wire wheel
@Terryblount Жыл бұрын
You didn't understand the part about removing the solvent immediately. That was done a couple years ago. If I could post a picture here you would see there is 0 damage. But manage yours the way that you think is best.

I'm not saying this video is wrong, But I will say I think there are a lot better ones out there. I wonder if this guy knows Martin personally or if he just watched his videos. I can't see Martin doing it this way...

@@ronachadwick7908 it's been 2 yrs since I made this comment and watching this video is even harder now than it was then. this is bad advice on how to take care of your rv. Go watch martin's channel RV Street. Or even RV 101. Not because this is wrong but if you are not carful enough or now your rv you can cause more damage than you are trying to fix.
