Removing Rust from Weight Plates with WD-40 and/or a Vinegar Bath

Great video on the subject. I used wd40 to scrub off some 40 year old plates from my dad and painted them black. They look clean while still keeping its textured and old character.

Interesting. After you applied the WD40, did you clean them in any way further to then put on the paint? Or did the WD40 essentially dry off?

90% rubbing alcohol should remove that tape quickly and if that doesn't work acetone/nail polish remover would eat right through it and possibly the paint as well. I've used acetone on a plastic paint palette but I didn't realize how strong it was. It ate through the acrylic stains and then through the palette. I've never used it on metal and from what I've read it shouldn't damage the plates. I'll be cleaning some 35 lb plates tomorrow so I'll test out the acetone to see if it could solve your problem at 9:21. I'm going to try and use a cloth with acetone on it to see what happens. I'll edit my comment later on with the result.

After hit ‘em with wd40 . Do u spray or wash em off or are plates left alone and slippery? Serious question. I got a back porch full of orange 45 plates. Thanks!

Well, after I WD-40ed them, I wiped them down with a towel. Then i just let them dry for a while. They don't really turn out slippery. I'd image that if you used an actual oil that might be more of an issue.
