Often I clean gutters for a customer and there is standing water in the gutters afterwards. This can be a big problem so we are going to tackle the issue using hidden hangers and re-pitch the gutters.

I’m a gutter installer and I’d suggest you start with the high side first for sure… Because you can push the high side all the way up (until the hanger touches the drip edge and work your way down)… because if you’re notching the next to last hanger on the downspout end on a 25+ft. Piece, you’re definitely in trouble… You will be running out of proper spacing to effectively drain the gutter and you may end up having the gutter too high to we’re it is pushing up the shingles and possibly damaging your roof system… Not being a nag, but any professional gutter installer would know this… Somethings ain’t as simple as it seems

I am getting ready to hire a gutter company to install new gutters on a new metal roof. They specified 36” spacing on hidden hangers. I have some large roof areas and am located in S Florida where we can have heavy downpours. I told them I want a minimum of 24”’spacing, but wondering if the largest areas should be 18”, or is 24” sufficient?

More hangers... had not considered that so thank you! If you don’t have one, I would invest in a water level with a super long tube. That way you can establish where level is and then travel with the tube and mark where that is and the measure down or up depending on how much gutter slope you want. The tool is a bit awkward but will really help you. Gives a loud audible when you reach level.

I think cleaning out those tiny shingle rocks that shed off the roof over time will help the water flow as well as the correct pitch. I will be installing inside brackets soon because of water rolling behind gutter in a 10 foot section of gutters. If the brackets don't fix the water behind gutter, I will install a drip edge flashing apron like you already have. I live in northern Indiana. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the video. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the gutter hangers to fit in my gutter. They were too long; there wasn’t enough give in the gutter to bend and hook it. I guess I would have to remove some of the existing gutter spikes … but maybe that will just make my standing water problem worse?
@TheAdamConners

Yes, just installing one would be pretty tricky. The gutter needs to be able to bend enough out of the way that you can hook the hanger in there. So yes, you would have to remove a few spikes to get one gutter hanger in.

Great video Adam. I'm in a spot now that the rainy season is beginning here in Hawaii. A tree fell on my gutter. Didn't damage it but it seems a bit bent so I got the hangers and attempted to do the repair but it's not going so easily. I have 6 inch aluminum gutters and the roof is three stories off the ground. I am doing it from the top which is fine but my problems are these 1. The roof hangs over at least an inch from the house with Drip edges covering the house side of the gutter edge 2 The gutters are attached with metal brackets that are riveted and are in good shape. (not going to remove and create more of a headache} 3. I have the six inch hanger and I can't slide the end under the drip edge. The space between the roof and the edge is minimal 4. Due to the metal brackets already installed, I can't fit the hanger so it's square. Its too tight I tried to just attach without going under the drip edge but the outer side of the gutter won't fit under the lip properly and the gutter just sits on it without being fully connected but it does raise up. Can I just do it that way since I really have no choice or is there a hack that I can use to solve? Thanks
@jonthomson1714
@jonthomson1714 2 жыл бұрын
Update. I put two hangers in without going under the lip just because it's supposed to rain hard again today. I think I will eventually snip the last riveted hanger and try to bend out the gutter enough to be able to get the hanger under the lip. If you have any ideas though, I'd love to hear them. Thanks again
@TheAdamConners
@TheAdamConners 2 жыл бұрын
First off BE CAREFUL! 3 stories up is really dangerous. You are going to have to decide if you want to drill through the drip edge or if you want to cut it on each side of the hanger and bend it up like I did in the video.

It was a tight fit but I got it in there. I managed to get it under the drip edge and drilled it.. All upside down from the top of course. I'll replace the rivet one day soon on the old bracket just to make sure it stays up there.. Just have to wait for a good downpour to see if it raised the gutter enough.. I assume those gutter hangers are identical. How do you adjust pitch if they are all the same size and snap on the same way? Do you have to bend some of them?
@TheAdamConners
@TheAdamConners Жыл бұрын
Pitch is determined by where you fasten the screws to the fascia. You just screw in each hanger and make sure the gutter is a little lower each hanger until you get to the downspout. For every 10 feet of gutter it should drop or slope 1/2”.

@@TheAdamConnersI just had a new roof put on would they have taken the gutters off to do that, Just wondering because they seem like they are pitched away from the downspouts, water doesn't drain anymore
@TheAdamConners
@TheAdamConners Жыл бұрын
@@rodgerbaer6382 no a roofing crew doesn’t remove the gutters unless the gutter hanger or gutter spike is nailed through the drip edge. In that case they may remove them, but a gutter company would reattach them. Now what is possible is during the roof install process a crew member accidentally putting too much weight on the gutter causing it to sag a little or fall away from the fascia. I’ve seen them put their foot in the gutter on real steep roofs to install drip edge or starter. It’s just them trying to brace themselves. It’s not necessary but understandable. It’s also possible they didn’t clean out the debris good enough in the downspout after the roof install. There is a ton of mess from tear off as you know by this point. Good luck. Keep us informed on the solution. 👍🏽

Yes, leaf guard is probably the most expensive out there. I believe they have a patent on that one piece design, and only allow certain vendors to install them due to warranty. At least that was the scenario when I used to sell them when I worked for a general contractor. Leaf free is a really good guard you can install yourself for about half the price. It won’t do anything about your water issue though.

@TheAdamConners
@TheAdamConners 2 жыл бұрын
As long as the gutter isn’t lower than the downspouts you should be good. Probably several ways of checking, but a string would definitely work. My gutter in the video only has one downspout so it’s just a gradual fall from right to left. Some gutters have downspout on each side so the middle would be the high point and it should fall both to left and right.
