I have commented before on your unboxings, that is almost a disgrace NOT to open an old kit. The folks that molded and packaged those kits deserve to have their work recognized. Made in the USA when that meant something special. Keep opening those old sealed kits Matthew.

My personal view is that all kits are meant to be built, otherwise they never reach their potential. 😊

1973... I graduated high school that June. That same weekend I worked as an official at the NASCAR race at Riverside. Tech & Safety Inspector for the sports car support races, then as a flagman for the NASCAR main event. Purt near got myself run over by a pair o' them ol' boys! On a road circuit, there are pairs of flagmen at some turns. Sometimes 2 or 3 places around a single turn, depending on likelihood of crashes and distance. Riverside Turn 6 we would have a crew at the beginning of the outside wall. Another infield side middle of the turn. And for the NASCAR races where they didn't use Turn 7 and the cars would go straight ftom the middle of 6 and head down to Turn 8, we would have a crew outside the exit of 6. We rotated crews around the track during a long race to prevent bored flagmen from not paying attention. So there we are, hot sun. No shade. The shoulder is graded hard pack about 50' wide, with a concrete drain ditch at the base of a vertical 7' high dirt bank. 2' back from the top of that bank was a 5' chain link fence. Behind the fence was car parking for the spectators using the Turn 6 bleachers. Some spectators would collect along the fence there to watch. As flagmen, we would stand facing each other. 1 guy facing towarf approaching racers, the other facing cars that have gone past. I was facing cars gone past, another guy, really beefy, recent Vietnam vet facing oncoming traffic. All of a sudden he grabs the front of my tee shirt and throws me into the ditch. Then he lands facedown by my feet. Then immediately 2 racers come slamming in. One goes head on into the bank so close above me I could have touched the hot headers right above my face and bounces off bavk toward the track. I didn't see much of the bounce back due to the explosion of dirt from the bank. As we stood up, my partner called to ask if I was OK. I confirmed. Then we realized the 2nd car had climbed up the 1st car as it slammed into the bank and went over the bank, tearing up a bunch of fence and several spectator cars. Fortunately the spectators were all able to jump clear and nobody was injured. I was not building new model kits much at all. I was still repairing some models that were damaged in the 71 earthquake. I still have some of those I haven't fixed yet. I was also rebuilding the VW Bug I had rolled on a canyon road. Plus I had started working Tech at offroad races for many organizations. And looking for a full time job + signing up for Jr. College because I had not been able to get a loan for any of the colleges that accepted me. ("Young white male doesn't need money for college, he's wealthy enough.")

Decal of License Plate "AMT 25"! Is not the year but is for AMT 25th Anniversary!

I'm building the original 64 1/2 Mustang kit by AMT 60 years ago it was my first AMT annual kit and started my concentration on auto models. I had some of my original kit left and bought a reasonably priced incomplete restorable kit at a show a few years back. Between the 2 and some scratch building I'm almost finished. Hope to paint it this weekend. Inspite of the "promo style" chassis I find the detail outstanding. You can read the speedometer with magnification and the "vinyl"top required only a black primer spray to look realistic. Dito for the optional convertible boot. The hubcaps are also nicely done as is the body and its details down to a tiny mustang in the center of the gas cap. Some of the repops o f these early kit lack this fine detail due to age. It's good to have an early verson to appreciate the craftsmanship. Anyway my 60th modeling anniversary coincides with the Mustang 60th so a good kit to build.

The custom car is actually a model of the real ala kart. A well known custom back in the 60's. It later burned in a fire. The roadster kit is a beautiful kit. You should build a nice version of the stock roadster.

Always enjoy when you open these old kits for the first time. For one that is 50 years old this is in excellent condition despite some of the flash which is expected. Not sure if the decals would be usable but they look in fairly good shape and I guess the "025" is a reference to the anniversary being celebrated on the box. It's also nice that in essence you get two whole kits in one box, but I guess this particular issue only has instructions for the custom build.

The "headlight buckets" you were wondering about are actually custom bumpers and the tber chrome piece in question I think is an overhead valve conversion for the 4 banger . This kit probably has some stuff from the Ala Carte version which was a 2nd custom option in the original kit. The custom-hotrod version here shares some parts with the AlaCarte.

The overhead valve cover looks like it's a Frontinac conversion. Common on the pre war era gow jobs. Got that kit in highschool mine was molded in white plastic. Unfortunately it never got built. I prefer buying and building the older releases in most cases.

From my understanding the custom parts that build that version were holdover parts from the ala kart and some had to be modified for copyright issues? But I know a lot of it came back in te 10:57 he early 2000,s before round 2
