For those wondering the reason alcohol work so well is because it has a molecular structure that is polar on one side and non polar on the other. In chemistry like dissolves like and from what I could tell looking online briefly the thermal paste seems to be made of some largely polar molecules mixed in a nonpolar goo Soo the alcohol is able to dissolve both materials where as the liquids that were more polar like acetone had a hard time breaking down the main part of the thermal paste and the water which is very very polar did basically nothing for you. I also looked into the Arctic silver cleaner which seems to have mostly just improved on these principles with there cleaners though there could be more at work in it they don't list every ingredients only the potentially hazardous ones on the SDS. The second paste seems to come off with a Stern look so I didn't look into it. (I could also be wrong I made it through sophmore year in chemistry soooo maybe if I'd stuck with it I'd be telling me how dumb I am right now)

I've always thought that the purpose of using 99% isopropyl is that it completely evaporates without leaving any residue like, say, orange juice would, so that if a bit gets on your motherboard/in the pins of your CPU, its not a big deal. Plus, it evaporates quickly, reducing the chance of powering on the system while there's still liquid.

I'm surprised the Goo Gone didn't do better with the MX thermal paste. We've found that the orange Goo Gone (there's a yellow Goo Gone that smells pretty bad) to be particularly effective removing hardened thermal paste. The only big issue we have with Goo Gone is that it's particularly oily, so we always apply it to the paper towel rather than directly on the CPU (a little dab will do you). Great video Linus - bit of a weird topic, but really useful.

@CondoreComputing7 жыл бұрын
I would like to see that as well, but for me at least as long as decent compound was used it seems to take 3-5 years to dry up, and i usually replace it on most of my devices for some reason or another by then. Even the cheap bulk tube of AS Ceramic compound i got probably 5 years ago comes off pretty easy even after a year of 24/7 use. Most people building a new PC are just cleaning the pre-installed stuff off of new heat sinks anyway. Now 5+ year old laptops, thats where you really need something that works well.

Bleach isn't a solvent. They're using 15 different solvents.
@Blackstar7427 жыл бұрын
orange and beer are solvents? 0.o
@P1ll_K7 жыл бұрын
a solvent is anything that can dissolve. OJ and beer are acutely acidic, meaning they're a solvent. bleach does "clean" things but usually by breaking down the organics of dyes and pigments, it's also why it kills bacteria and cleans up blood by breaking down the organic material in them. so if the thermal compound adherent substance was organic it could potentially remove it, but that's a big if since they're all synthetic.
@apollo73177 жыл бұрын
No bleach, but there is windex. That's close enough for me!
@Dracounius7 жыл бұрын
They do use bleach in the video. Acids, bases and bleach (usually bases) clean using the same principle, dissolving the substances (or reacting with them in such a way to make them soluble) and suspending or removing them with the solvent the acid (or whatever) is suspended in (usually water). The chemistry behind them is different and therefore works on different things, but the general principle is the same when it comes to cleaning. And being highly acidic is no guarantee of being a solvent, as is apparent here as coca cola is far more acidic than beer or orange juice and did worse than beer and just as bad as orange juice. Now that being said, bleach is not a specific type of chemical but is instead a general term for most chemicals that bleach...stuff...Two of the more common ones being Sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide (used in video). And as most types of bleach are oxidizer's they will in fact corrode metal and most other things that oxidise given time and suitability.

My problem is that this video is mostly entertainment, because it ignores the effect of any gunk that's left on the surfaces of the CPU and the heatsink when using these "products". Because if you REALLY believe that all of the beer or orange juice is absorbed by the paper towel, I have some prime real estate on the moon to sell you. Even the acetone based nail polish should be avoided if it isn't 99 or 100% acetone, unless you really know that whatever chemicals are in the nail polish bottle won't have a detrimental effect in conducting heat when in contact with a new application of thermal paste. So if you really want to clean the CPU properly, stick to 100% acetone or 99% isopropyl alcohol before applying the thermal paste again.

For those worried about water left over from 70% IPA, understand that circuit boards are literally cleaned in water after being built in manufacturing. Not alcohol, just H20 in either an ultrasonic cleaner or water that is mixed with carbon and stuff like my company does. We use compressed air machine to dry up any excess water after the boards come out the cleaner. If you're worried about water left over under processors and other parts just get some compressed air and use the straw attachment thing to spray air under the parts to get the water out.

Speaking of thermal paste, I would like to see various thermal compounds exposed to high temperatures, to see which one gives out first.

I just use a microfiber cloth (like the ones that come in a LCD screen cleaning kit) and some rubbing alcohol. Last removal I used 50% which made me have to work harder to remove the paste, but it worked just fine. People often treat the application and removal of thermal paste like you're stepping on a potato chip, it's not that fragile.

I learned from working at a high end restaurant, the absolute king of copper cleaners is ketchup. it will make it shine like factory new, I've been using this method to clean my copper sinks for years. Try on any copper prior to your cpu cooler if you have trust issues. I do use alcohol initially to loosen (not needed) up the compound, then I use ketchup to remove all and I mean all residue left behind.

Hey Linus Tech, Is it possible to use perfume to clean my CPU because of the high alcohol part? My dad used this method and I think he still uses it. Although there are a lot of oils in it, he never had problems with technology, but I am really sceptical to use it myself. Do you have any ideas or thoughts about this?
