Your video was fine. It was a tricky job. The interaction between the your bucket truck, the crane and the ground crew was well documented as was the tension surrounding the separation of this tree from the home. As for making further videos Practice makes perfect but perfect doesn't exist. For a first effort you did fine job of portraying the incident. If I could make a suggestion it would be, be kind to yourself. You have a lot of responsibility on your plate already, the safety of your crew and machinery, liability for further damage, all that financial stuff. Plus now videoing, narrating and then, at the end of the day, on top of everything else, editing and uploading. You've done your job admirably. The armchair, keyboard warriors are going to war. It's what they do. You, on the other hand have more important things to do

I was a land developer, buy acreage, put in the sewers, water mains, streets, curb/gutter, obviously all of the excavating and clearing. I have cleared a massive amount of lumber in my day. (20+ years ago) 52 now not to sound like I'm ancient. LOL. Anyhow, I used to rent the largest chipper that a person could rent. NOT from your average rental place, but a commercial rental. It was probably comparable to this one, probably not quite as big, its hard to say. But we just let the chips fall on the ground, it did not have that hydraulic feed arm (that is F...g freaking awesome) and it didn't have the intake tracks. I did have HUGE FEED DRUMS. We loaded it with Bobcats that had grappling buckets on them. About the first month on my 2nd development, a professional clearing company about 10 miles away (same county) came out of the woods hauling wood to the chipper and his operator, WAS GONE. Couldn't figure out where he went, thought he might be peeing somewhere in the brush utnil they noticed all of the RED sprayed in the chip piles. All I ever heard was that "they thought" he might have committed suicide by jumping in beacause they couldn't figure out how he got in it. (Getting clothing snagged on a large branch, tough clothing, and you could be a goner, drag you right through. The one I rented, had what we called "suicide cords" because right as you were clearing the feed drums, they hung down, and you could "pull them" and I think it reversed the feed drums, or stopped the chipper, one or the other, by then however, you probably were missing your legs. Not sure, never wanted to find out. That same summer, a landscaper was found dead on his Bobcat. Went down through the woods, he was an experienced operator, driving like a bat out of hell, he was known for being a rough neck like that, but his bucket was low to the ground, and he hit an unseen stump. No seatbelt. He came to an absolute sudden stop, his body slammed against the safety bar, sent a rib up through his heart.

Hi from the UK. Now I know that there's a lot of weight to that tree and it's going to do some damage, however it appears to me that that house is very lightly constructed. I know in the states that you use a lot of timber construction in your house building, would it have withstood better had it been of a sturdier construction ??.
@AxehandleA2 жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed this video! good first effort -:) As a former pro Logger this is one job that is not for the amateur no matter how easy it looks! The initial guy without doubt cut His hinge off at the stump causing top heavy tree to go where gravity wanted it to go , the butt of the tree also kicked back slightly after it made contact with the house-dangerous- . A thicker hinge, proper saw control, and a bigger notch would have went a long way here, not to mention ropes , pulleys tackles etc. The tree was not rotten at the stump and these hardwoods have massive shear strength to take them where you want- If you know what you're doing..... The tree was able to slice through the roof rafters and end wall so easily as it was a direct hit from the stem of the tree, no branches to soften that blow. The angle it hit at didn't help either, huge momentum. I just hope no one was hurt.
@davidhorsley11492 жыл бұрын
The house is salvageable. Just takes a contractor that knows what to do. I would guess that house has 3 bearing points. Front wall, back wall, and load bearing center divider. Simply brace front and center wall upstairs, remove roof system, back wall, and back half of second floor. Then back half of gable end wall on first floor, then start rebuilding. Interior walls perpendicular to front and back are not load bearing so they can be reframed after exterior is dried in. Once first floor gable wall is replaced, second floor back can be reframed and sheathed. Depending on damage to plates, second floor back wall may be salvaged as a unit. Frame second floor gable wall and then install roof system and sheath. Once dried in, interior framing can be finished up, wiring done, insulation and drywall and paint. May sound involved but unless outright condemned, it's cheaper to build half a house than the whole thing. That's all the insurance will be concerned with, the bottom line. But speaking of insurance, even if the homeowners policy pays for the damage. They will be having a conversation in the courts with the poor idiot that dropped the tree on the house. He had just as well tell the homeowner, he'll buy the house because he's going to pay for it anyway. Tough break for somebody.

@davidhorsley11492 жыл бұрын
@@adrianstoddard1286 getting money from someone who screws up in this fashion is pretty straight forward. The homeowners insurance pays the homeowner, then they (the insurance company), sues the at fault party's insurance and if they have none they sue the at fault party. It's called "subrogation" ! Because of the fact that most insurance companies are subsidized by public investment, and are included in the portfolio of many retirement funds and incidentally, those of state lawmakers. There are state laws on the books, requiring people who work in such trades that exposes their customers to such large financial risk to carry liability insurance. If a person attempts to engage in one of the many professions that puts their clientele at such financial risk without carrying a reasonable amount of liability insurance, they by default assume the risk. And these laws effectively bar bankruptcy as a means to make themselves judgementproof. In other words, you can run but you can't hide, one way or another you pay.

I highly suspect there is not adequate insurance coverage ?? " Just my thoughts "I'm not a tree cutter but judging by the squarish cutting on all 4 sides this may have been cutters 1st \ 2nd attempt @ tree removal ??

Yup, there's no hope to fix that. Seen this scene many times after Cat 5 Hurricane Michael came through my town of Panama City, FL in 2018. 157 mph wind or someone in over their head. Results look the same. Great job guys. He should have called the pros.

If he did the inside done correctly- then he forgot to looking at the outside. The outside is a real mess. That is why the inside must have been just a cover up.

So.... did insurance cover that? Looks like they need to scrap it and go with a new build.

Sure the house is repairable. Just like they build a classic car using one panel and call it a restoration.. Or in this case one wall. But it would cost more than starting over at the foundation.

Appears to be a very poorly built structure. I was in emergency storm damage salvage for many years, surprised by the damage caused by the tree. Our approach was always to stabilise the situation against further damage. A top down approach, rather than this bottom up approach. Never work under the cut, just inviting a trip to the hospital.

Well, at least with the high price of lumber these days, it's got some salvage value. Hopefully the initial tree cutter (definitely not an Arborist) will stick to a better day job and have a good lawyer on the wage garnishment settlement...

Did they track down the guy that cut the tree and get him to pay for the damage he did, great work on your part, this is the reason that I turn and tell some people that I'm not comfortable cutting some trees down and suggest getting a team like yours in

I didn't catch if what the homeowner paid the house-crasher guy was mentioned. It can be very expensive to have a large tree removed by a skilled professional, but obviously you generally get what you pay for. We paid $800 to have an old, very large, mostly dead, house over-hanging pin oak cut down several years ago. We had it done during a slow time, and we were given a very good price for the amount of skilled work the arborist and team did in bringing down the tree safely without anything landing on our home. I cannot imagine anyone trying to remove a tree with a canopy that large without topping it out first. Maybe that's standard proceedure in other parts of the US (doubtful), but here in Texas we try to make trees smaller before felling them. A tall full-canopied tree can quickly become an uncontrolable, very expensive, and even life threatening, major "oops". The smaller the tree, the easier it is to control where it falls, so topping out the canopy makes a lot of sense. Yeesch.

Is this the right way to build a SKY LITE on a house 🏠 or is there a better way?
@dkeith452 жыл бұрын
WOW, LOL. Worst one of this type I've ever seen! Reality is, the tree is going to fall the way it's leaning, no matter what you do. If this tree was leaning towards the house, the homeowner should indeed have hired someone with much experience and a boom truck or an expert climber so they could cut it from the top down bit by bit.
@albertawheat68322 жыл бұрын
Nope that's not true at all you have to do some pressure cuts as well as a deep notch (hinge) and you can drop most trees in desired direction. Plus having wedges with you will keep you in control of the direction. ( Yes there are cases, where this happens) Cheers.

@@albertawheat6832 I admit, I have limited tree experience. I worked on a wood crew in East Texas only for a year back in the mid 80's and then have done a number of trees in the Chicago area here and there over the years. I'm sure it's a LOT different in a large forest where the trees are all mostly growing straight up. In that case you likely can have such a tree fall anyway you notch it etc. But when a trees leaning heavily in a certain direction which is very common in ppls yards, it's going to fall in that direction, believe me. A rope is not going to help redirect it. A steel cable, large chain, maybe, though even then it's tricky and isn't going to work as well as you might think. That's been my experience : )
@albertawheat68322 жыл бұрын
@@dkeith45 I hear you...like I said if you make the right cuts you can drop them against their lean. But I fully understand what you are saying also... Cheers.

Every piece of wood in that house was impacted by that tree. Every wall is now out of a square. That's a teardown and a rebuild. I'll bet even the brick foundation was compromised. It's cheaper to rebuild it than to repair it. Take it down in a day, and start building the next. Repairing would be a week of precision demo and even then you can't see all the residual damage deep in the bowels of the house.

Even the homeowner should have known a tree this lopsided and off center should have been dismantled small sections at a time. Anyone that would be willing to just go lumberjack on it definitely had no idea what they were doing.

I had to get two 100-foot pine trees, that were next to my house, cut down after an ice storm on 12/30/19 sent a branch through the roof of my house. I hired pros who are insured to do the job. $1500 to cut them down and cart them away. Insurance paid for a new roof (metal, I live in the mountains in the Northeast) as well as new siding and a casement window. Too bad it wasn't hardwood, I could have saved on firewood for the following winter.

If you look at time 0:11 and freeze it the tree was hinged to fall down the driveway (text book) but the side towards the house held on and this is the result.

Anything can be repaired... the problem is who's insurance is going to pay for it... did the first guy have insurance?... he should be arrested for leaving the scene of a criminal act... that wasn't an accident, that was incompetence... he is lucky no one was injured or even killed... a good house contractor could probably same at least 1/3 of the front half of the house... in major home improvements, California building code says as long as you leave ONE original wall you can totally build a new house.
