I work in a mortgage company and we work with HUD for FHA-insured loans. Remote work actually was a good thing for my department. We always had good metrics, so it's easy to notice whenever someone is slacking. As long as our remote numbers remain the same or better than our on-site numbers then they're perfectly content to let us remain remote indefinitely. Probably not a good method for work that is more ambiguous and difficult to track. Remote work isn't for everyone. Some people just don't have the discipline for it, but I really appreciate the flexibility as well as saving both time and money.

The fact that there is already an excessive amount of demand awaiting its absorption, despite how everyone is frightened and calling the crash, is another reason why it is less likely to occur that way. 2008 saw no one, at least not the broad public, making this forecast, as I'll explain below. The ownership rate was noted to have peaked in 2004 in the other comment. Having previously peaked in the second quarter of 2020, we are currently at the median level. Between 2008 and 2012, it dropped by 3%, and by the second quarter of 2020, it had dropped from 68 to 65.

There's been plenty of studies that flexible work arrangements boosts productivity. The media narrative that work from home hurts productivity has been debunked so many times, but it continues getting perpetuated. Anecdotally, there are a small handful of workers that abuse the privilege, but there are people that slack in the office, too. The answer isn't forcing people into cubicles, it's holding people accountable for getting work done. Managers need to check in with employees regularly and verify that progress is being made, find out if there's any blockers, etc. Rather than across the board return to office policies, low performers need to be held accountable. If you really cared about saving taxpayers money, we'd be complaining about the government renewing leases on offices they aren't using. Work from home would be a huge money saver if office leases were allowed to expire.

I think it depends on the sector. Jobs with a necessary human-facing component can be tricky remotely. I teach in a University and our remote learning classes during COVID absolutely sucked. It has had a knock-on effect when returning to in-person teaching as well as all the undergrads have stunted social skills now. I have a class where I let them interact with the slides using their smartphones and they are unbelievably enthusiastic about this. But in the very same lecture when I ask them questions, all I get is a sea of blank faces - no one is brave enough to speak up.
