Ren has been playing music on the streets since he was 17 yrs old for hrs a day 5 or so days a week to make money to live on. He started out with a guitar, a microphone and a speaker and has added to it over the years. You need to see his (live) busking videos on the streets and you will see no auto tune is used or any vocal effects that alter his voice. He has put distortion on his voice in some music videos because he wants a distortion on his voice for a reason, to make a point or whatever. He has a gifted and beautiful "polyphonic" voice. His range is big. As he get older...34 this month it has only intensified and gotten stronger. He can flip an octave on a dime, and has excellent control. So what you hear is him and live. Yes, he cleans up the music in post production but what you hear is what you get. He is known for live performances in one take. Why? Because he has been doing it his whole life and it is as easy as breathing to him. Of course minus the years he was laying in bed sick with lymes disease.

On the "Ren Train?" with just 3 of his songs, the train ain't even left the station son.. sheesh.. and yes it is truly live, and no it is not auto-tuned. ren is the master of 'one-takes' along with Sam who does most of his videography. Ren has a huge catalogue and is multi-genre, not to mention all his street busking with The Big Push band.. I think I will stick around and watch the fun as you go from station to station.. cheers for the reaction.

Ren and his videographer/co-director recently won awards at the International Music Awards - Best Music Video and Best Director, Music Video and Honorable Mention, Best Cinematography for Money Game 3. Ren does a lot of live performance videos and the audio is done live. Ren is very good at producing immaculate sounding live performances, he got a lot of practice working on the busking (live street performances) of his former band The Big Push. If you're in to sound engineering, he talks about some of the technical aspects in an interview here on KZbin. Ren fan here and I've watched a ton of reactions to Ren's music over the last 14 months or so. Enjoyed your reaction here.

Ren's been releasing 30 minute videos on Patreon showing how he masters his songs. THIS IS LIVE. And he'll show you exactly what he's done to tweak it (it's pretty boring if this isn't your thing.) It's usually a lot of VERY subtle things, after which he says, "So this is it dry, and this is the final product.", and the final product is about 10% better. He has a TON of busking videos (many posted by random bystanders) where you can hear what he sounds like on the street filmed on an iPhone, and it's always UNBELIEVABLE! When Ren uses autotune, and it's rare, it's because he wants that particular effect in that song. Oh ye of little musical faith.

Oh, and I think Picasso is a genius who shifted the paradigm of art in the 20th century, but I wouldn't hang a single one of his works on my wall (even if I could afford them.) Unlike Picasso in painting, however, Ren does just about everything musically. My guess is unless your taste runs to Gregorian chants or Tuvan throat singing, you'll probably find a bunch of Ren's music you can blast in your car. You've only scratched the surface.

Oh boy, you are in for a ride and I’m so here for it! Your introduction to him was definitely a bit unusual, but I’m truly fascinated to see a reactor approach him from a different angle! Typically everyone starts with Hi Ren, which I do feel is the essential piece to understand just how mind-blowing this man is! From there, they usually go to Tale of Jenny and Screech, Sick Boi (the song rather than the album it’s on), Chalk Outlines, How to Be Me, and onto the rest of his albums diagonally, usually with Money Game 1, 2, 3 in a single video or a contiguous stretch. All of these are good routes for you to take, but I’ll just go ahead and release my favorites (there’s a lot). (From his most recent album) - Seven Sins - Genesis - Suic*de - Castles Made of Sand (Hidden track not on KZbin) - Murderer - The Hunger - Wicked Ways - Sick Boi Pt. 2 - Loco - What You Want - Uninvited (From his album before the last) - Insomnia - Depression - Ready For You - Everybody Drops - Crucify Your Culture - Diazapam Take all the time you need, but both myself and Ren’s many fans are eager to see your feelings and hear your thoughts, even if they haven’t quite found you yet! Oh, and he very often records live in one-takes. Also just subbed o7 stay blessed

Hopefully, you’ll find what the rest of us love about Ren. So give it a few more songs and then make up your mind. Oh, and not that you’re going to join his Patreon, but Ren has a video on how he mixed the Fred again mashup. He does this live. You can see for yourself. And in this case, no autotune. Here's a little video Ren released about the making of this track kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYq2lKKYmZJjasU Ren is totally independent and I think being without a label and the music industry machine, we wouldn't have the Ren that we have today as it's allowed him the freedom to create what he wants. Ren Gill only became "famous" 1 year ago after releasing the epic Hi Ren track. He's a very humble guy and believes very much in the phrase "A rising tide lifts all ships" and has brought many of his mates and other musicians along this journey with him. He credits youtube reactors with a lot of his rise to fame and success and never blocks his videos for any reactor.

You almost lost me on suggesting this wasn't live or was auto-tuned. Most reactors fall into that trap, though, so I'm going to watch the whole reaction. Sometimes he uses various effects and distortions if that's what the song calls for -- all of which he produces himself, btw -- and sometimes he edits a video together so seamlessly he gets away with cutting several takes together and making it seem like a one-take, but when he's live he's live. And here, he's live. Live one takes are kind of his thing. Ren is remarkable... watch your subscriber count rise now that you've found Ren.

Ren has a very extensive catalog to look through that is easily accessible online. He has such a deeply loyal fan base who will defend him on every possible critique, you will find. This is a mashup--basically a cover that involves mashing two or more songs (like the Fred Again mashup). Ren does it semi-frequently. This is a mashup of The Police, Message in a Bottle, and Back on 74 by a band called Jungle. Ren generally doesn't use autotune--Lost All Faith was an exception as autotune gave it the effect he wanted for that song. This entire thing went from idea to fully fleshed video in 10 days over last Christmas when Ren went back home for a treatment break. It's a real tribute to his team of friends who work with him on these videos.

It's two 'covers', he calls them retakes, but the rap and the arrangement is his. Back on 74 is by Jungle, and as you recognised, Message in a Bottle is by the Police. You might like to try the duets between Ren and Chinchilla, and songs by Chinchilla herself. He 'plays well with others'. I won't overload you with suggestions, i can see others have given you some great ideas. He does some post mixing but he only ever uses autotune intentionally (to give the effect of autotune). However, he does much of his live recordings as one takes, he spent years busking so he's well practiced at getting it right first time. Nice reaction!

Ren is the definition of authentic. That’s why he has such a cult following.

No auto tune. Definitely live...1 take. He takes a ton of pride optimizing the tracks for clarity

Just subbed as I’m excited to witness your Ren journey! I found him about a year ago with Hi Ren and I’ve literally have not stopped listening to him since! Lots of great suggestions in the comments and looking forward to what you choose next! Much love from the Uk!😊xxx

I get it, the comment about putting Ren on in your car. He has some songs that are awe-inspiring but not for cruisin' around, not for Sunday morning cleaning your house or working out at the gym. But he does have some of those, too. "Back on 74" is originally by Jungle, but the inserted rap is all Ren. "Message in a Bottle" is originally The Police. You shouldn't apologize, some reactors don't know either song at all. Which is ok. Everyone questions whether it's really live -- but YES. The key, imo, is the post-production Ren puts in. No auto-tune.

Live. No autotune. You’ve barely scratched the surface.

He took 2 oldies & mashed them together & made it his own original, he does it often

Covers but his own lyrics also. That line was written by him. No autotune on his lives.

No apologies needed --just roll with it. There's much to learn on the Ren train. You're in for a great experience!

you havent seen enough of rens other stuff that is very different to what you have already reacted too, he nearly covers every genre out there, its insane, i hope you have a chance to explore some more, would love to know what your downtime music is like, we might be able to link you up with a ren song that sits that genre :) because the Ren-Rabbit Hole runs deep. Anyway loved the review and your honesty, you may not end up loving him even after hearing everything and thats what i love about music, its unique and not everyone loves the same thing

This would be better described as a "mash up" or two songs blended together. Message in a Bottle by The Police and Back on 74 is the 6th section of an hour long music video movie called Volcano by Jungle.

Love your reactions Peach. First song is a cover of a Jungle song, middle is all Ren rapping, ending is a cover of The Police.
