😂 was not expecting that enthusiasm at the end! Re: the execution It's not that we don't notice the flaws, it's just that some of them add to it and are intentional (hear me out please) ... Nothing in the story itself is shiny and perfect and pretty. Sexual and physical abuse, paedophilia, drugs and gang culture, death, murder, and being orphaned are all raw, ugly, and gritty, so it doesn't make sense for it to be a perfect, polished, stage-school performance. Some of them are just live 'blips' that happen, and I like that he's real enough not to fake it and edit them out. Too much of this world is autocorrected, autotuned, airbrushed, tweaked, up itself, and just plain overproduced.

Most of the big vocal analysts highlight the fact Ren *doesn't* always sound perfect and isn't scared to sound 'ugly' or imperfect. It adds a layer of realism and confidence, in a world where art is often overprocessrd. Art isn't perfect. It can be messy and still beautiful, because it is real. One of the most real videos out there is Blind Eyed featuring car park attendant. A string snaps, they're chased out of the garage, but they continue to perform, blips and laughs, and the finished product is amazing because it is *real* and the talent seeps through even with the little mistakes while hurrying out

The way Ren draws you in to Violet's story to the point you (listener in general) almost forget about Jenny and Screech's stories, only to tie it all up at the end, is masterful. It then forces you to go back and put the pieces of the story together... a masterpiece. Good reaction, you're growing on me. :D

The fact that it was one-take means that there's a little latitude if a phrase or two isn't in perfect synch with the music or if a pitch here or there is flat or sharp. That's what makes live performances so good and unique. If he didn't care for the style, he should just say that, but to suggest that the "execution" was bad is nonsense. But then, he's entitled to his opinion, as am I. I'm not slamming him, I'm just disagreeing with him.

Props for watching it, and for the respect to the audience. The lack of any emotional response to the music and what it tries to convey is a subjective thing, but the lack of emotional response to the events he describes is objectively a damning tale itself. Two kids die and your response was "people die every day". Violet gets beaten to death and you roll your eyes. This response tells a story maybe as powerful as Ren's. I don't know if you've ever seen something like Shakespeare at a theatre but it has that whole theatrical performance vibe to it. I'm from the UK and studied some theatre many years ago so I recognised the presentation instantly. There's two things that make this impressive. First, all 3 parts are separate one-take live videos. Second, this all started with a newspaper article about a young woman being knifed, and the killer shot by police shortly thereafter. Jenny and Screech were both born on the same day and died on the same day. As victims of violence, both Jenny’s and her mother’s response to it was to freeze in silence…a response which led to both of them being killed. The trilogy closes in a circle, just as the circle of violence through three generations (Jenny’s father was abusive) also closes in a circle. All three, victims of domestic abuse, passed down through generations.

He actually has insane vocal control if you check out some of his busking with the Big Push or Sam Tompkins or his live duets with Chinchilla you might find the kind of execution you wanna hear Anyways - really appreciate you taking the time to see this one through! 🙏 If you check out more of his stuff there'll be loads more subscribers heading your way - and many of us actually like to hear your honest opinion and see your true reaction keeping it real and roasting the shit out of a piece when it's hilarious like this. Fun reaction. A few little Easter eggs after hearing some interviews and live streams. 2:23 you called Jenny a profit. That's a twin sense or intuition, even though she didn't know about him. The part where Patrick and his girl were both unavailable. They were busy-together. The song was it in 2019, and he rewind to 'two-zero-zero-five' (2005, 14 years prior... Jenny and screech were both 14.). She was a street walker and he was a theif. At 14:11 he called her a slut. She was already pregnant when she met him so guess who was the father? Also, the ghost you threw in there had me rolling, that was really funny. Only one thing bothered me, you criticized the execution, but you really have to appreciate they are all done in one take. A single uncut unedited recording from beginning to end. That's talent. Your laughing at the end was awesome!

Fair play to you! A bona fide hater of Ren, you put yourself through torture and your reaction at the end was brilliant! However, you fixated on the execution, the sound for criticism. Through a certain lens fair enough, that's your view. I would suggest that there are millions of artists in studios, producing songs within an inch of their lives. If that's the only lens you want to see music through, auto-tuned to f*ck, artificially pitch perfect, that of course, is entirely your prerogative. Then ask yourself, how many artists are producing live one take content? It's a unique genre. I've been to umpteen live concerts, mistakes are made, some words out of tune but it's raw, it's rough, but it's LIVE!! That's exactly why this genre appeals to me and many.

I'm not in the extremes, and since I don't have to automatically hate when someone displays a modicum of intelligence, it's easy for me to say Ren is a talented artist. When dozens of "fans" with monosyllabic vocabularies try to tell me, a pro multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer of many years, that I "just don't get it" and try to have me "go listen to x song or reactor's opinion!", coupled with clunky insults, it's hard to take the artist seriously though. Look at the audience he's cultivated! The same could be said, and worse, about any modern pop artist though, I guess, but being 100% clear... Eugene's audience isn't truly haters. We like _honesty._ I've personally talked to Ren, told the man straight to his face his music isn't for me, but I do respect his work ethic. So I don't feel a bit bad for being honest. 🤷‍♂ I do appreciate you reminding me of the obvious though, it can be easy to overlook how loud the uninformed can be.

I have ridden on the crest of many musical fads, from Prog Rock (Yes, Floyd, Genesis) to Punk Rock (The Clash, The Stranglers, The Buzzcocks), from Ska (The Specials, Madness, The Beat) to Brit Pop (Oasis, Pulp, Blur). With Ren, I have never seen a singer play in so many genres, often mixing them up. However, everyone has the right to "hate" an artist. It's why I drop in on MichelleShow because it's a refreshing take. My "hate" artist? Rod Stewart! But I do like 3 of his songs, it's the other x hundred of them!

Yeah, if you prefer heavily produced music to raw live performance just say that but Ren played intricate classical guitar while walking down stairs, strolled around the streets singing and playing simultaneously, hitting marks all in a one take live recording while keeping the audience entranced with great storytelling and performance. He absolutely nailed the execution and to say otherwise is just ignorance to how difficult what Ren is doing truly is. There's a 40 min video on Ren's channel explaining the situation that caused him to create this song. Basically, Ren and a producer, Kujo, had some issues to do with the Beat that Ren bought and used to make his song Sick Boi. Kujo used a stolen sample, didn't tell Ren when Ren bought the Beat, etc, etc, etc.... Anyway, Ren tried to come to a fair agreement but dude just kept turning everything down and threatened to take 100% of the money made from the publishing AND the master - which he prob wouldn't win from the receipts that Ren shows in the video. Kujo issued a copyright strike on the vid as leverage, refused to put it back up so finally Ren got sick of shit and took the song off all platforms himself and is re-creating the song in full - WITHOUT A STOLEN SAMPLE AND WITHOUT KUJO - and Ren is putting out a song dedicated to Kujo called Kujo Beatdown and Ren has warned it's a very angry song... he has said this one does not end like his Dotta diss. if you want more info, I would watch the video on Ren's channel about the situation and check out the post on his community page I tagged you on about 12 hours or so ago.

Appreciate your reaction to this song. This is a VERY SAD tale; But, what I LOVE the MOST about "The Tale of Jenny and Screech" is that in the end it points out that Jenny and Screech were siblings. This gave me insight into Ren's compassion for humanity and the recognition of how wrong it is. It should not be this way. We all brothers and sisters. That we are divine spiritual beings in mortal bodies. We should treat each other as such. Jenny and Screech grew up in the foster system so that they didn't know they were siblings. But, if we're taught like we should be taught; that we are ALL BROTHER and SISTERS! That is the way we should ALL treat each other! This is what I like about this song. Hopefully, one day we will all know this. "Every so often there comes an artist that says things on a certain level that just resonates." It's one thing to say that the performance is not to your taste; that makes complete sense. Ren's music and words are thoughtfully and cleverly composed, his storytelling is world-class, and his performance is skillful, expressive, and 100% authentic. When you add that these stories were recorded in single takes, you're approaching the top 1% of the top 1% level of skill. Anyway... thanks again for the great reactions here and elsewhere. This is a theatrical performance more than a song that you would hear playing in your whip . The style is referred to as modern day bard or bardcore. The individual will flip between character and narrator throughout the story. Something you’d see in the early mediaeval times. Yeah yeah yeah… I’ll get shredded by a whole mob of people who (somehow) pride themselves on spreading negativity and being “haters”. It’s cool. Go ahead and waste your time. I must admit I’ll never understand how it’s possible that so many people use the internet as an excuse to be their absolute worst selves. It just doesn’t make sense to me. It’s so fuckin useless. Isn’t there more than enough ugliness in the world without allowing it in what should be entertainment? Allowing it into something as universal as music and art? So damned depressing. Michelle, I have really enjoyed your reactions to Rage, Tool, System, etc… music I grew up on. I’m glad you enjoyed the plot twist here. Reading the comments and watching you throughout, I can’t help but be reminded of children brought to see a artful theatre production and them snickering the whole way thru cuz it doesn’t sound like their favorite radio station. You have your own sense of humor and whatnot… and that’s cool. You’re a pretty funny dude. But I thought channels like this were designed to INTENTIONALLY expose people to things that are DIFFERENT. And appreciate them for what they are. Cuz here’s the bottom line: what this young man is doing in this piece was THE art that was THE IT THING for generations upon generations. A bard. A wandering minstrel, if you will. The whole point IS the story. It’s not supposed to be produced and perfect. It’s absolutely not *supposed to be* something you’d rock out to in your car. You’ve SEEN for yourself that Ren CAN and DOES do many many other styles and genres…and he does them very well. So one must then logically assume that he’s doing this here, this way, entirely on purpose. Example: you’ve seen Disturbed’s singer cover Sounds of Silence? Listening to Disturbed’s original music… the “screaming” and growling and metal sounding voice… it was pretty surprising to many that he had THE PIPES, that he was capable, to do what he did in that cover. People our parents age…people who don’t understand Rock or Metal would likely hear him sing Sounds of Silence and wonder “if he can sing LIKE THAT, why oh why does he do all that screaming and growling all the time??” They assume he sings Metal because that’s all he CAN do. But he does it because HE WANTS TO. He chooses to. It’s the style of his music. It’s the way HE chooses to do HIS art. You could say the same about the singers of System of a Down. And many others. Or people who don’t like Rap music finding out a rapper is a GREAT singer… “why does he Rap then??” Cuz he WANTS to, dummy. That’s his style for his art. To you and me, it seems like a stupid question but people HONESTLY ask that shit. Same applies here. The Tales by Ren are not “poorly executed”. It’s the style precisely as that style should be. The overly exaggerated notes here and there, the use of whatever is around you, the totally untraditional, rapid change ups on the instrument, the theatrical wailing like in the line “Screech, dear boy, WHEEEEEEERE did he go”, the exaggerated body language, etc etc. You said Ren fans ONLY care about the story… again, in this style, the story IS the piece. If it had a traditional beat and perfectly sung notes without emphasis but NO STORY.. it would NOT have been a successful example of this style of art. If it’s not your cup of tea…that’s cool. But don’t get it twisted. It’s NOT poorly executed. It’s an incredibly demanding performance piece done exceptionally well. It would be arrogant to assume that just because we don’t understand something that that means it’s poorly done or it’s wrong. It’s our exposure to and our understanding of the style that is lacking… not the performance. ☮️♥️ Let the shredding begin…. 🤷‍♀️

Hi Ren and the Tales are not SONGS. I mean they ARE but it's the fact that you're talking about a man with a guitar, telling an impactful story that HE wrote, ON THE STREETS with no edits. Say what you want about execution, but that's TALENT, my guy and that's why we're here for Ren. STRIPPED DOWN he's fucking fantastic - his actual EDITED videos and music are BEYOND incredible. REN IS DIFFERENT! I'm glad you stuck to the end to experience the story and have that moment explosive moment of surprise, understanding and respect. And it's great to finally see some acceptance of Ren's art, as a whole - aka not just vocals or just lyrics, or just his 'rap' ability. But look, I fully agree with you that the execution throughout can be rough... but you've also gotta remember he is literally performing this thing as a one-take LIVE street performance (not on a set) while doing all of the vocals, instruments, choreography and acting... and it was 2 years ago when he had less experience and hadn't blown up like he has now.
