The Italian sculptor known as Donatello helped to forge a new kind of art - one that defines the Renaissance. His work was progressive, innovative, challenging and even controversial. Using a variety of novel sculptural techniques and perspectives, Donatello depicted human sexuality, violence, spirituality and beauty. But to really understand Donatello one needs to understand a changing world, a transition from Medieval to Renaissance and to an art more personal and part of the modern self. Donatello was not just a man of his times, he helped create the spirit of the times he lived in, and those to come.
In this beautifully illustrated book A. Victor Coonin describes the full extent of Donatello’s revolutionary contribution and shows how his work heralded the emergence of modern art.
Speakers:
A. Victor Coonin (Rhodes College) in conversation with Fabio Barry, and François Quiviger (Warburg Institute)
This event took place on 27 October 2022.
Renaissance Lives is a series of biographies published by Reaktion Books as well as a series of conversations discussing the ways in which individuals transmitted or changed the lives of traditions, ideas and images. warburg.sas.ac....

Brilliant lecture! I bought the book a couple of months ago during my trip to Florence and I can't wait to read it. Wonderful and in-depth analysis of Donatello's work mixed with personal view. Thank you!

It is refreshing to hear ‘problematic’ used correctly in an academic talk - when used of more recent figures, it now almost always is used to mean ‘holding political ideas I dislike.’
