I attempted writing an English lyrics. It's not a mirror translation. It was hard to translate becouse the dialect is very old, it's often hard to make sense of. The poem itslelf is 460 paragraphs long, so this is just a small portion of it. Most of it uses a kind of past tense that does not exist in Hungarian anymore, so I did not know what was the English equivalent of it, I just used what I felt right. So feel free to correct me: I am writing the tale of the castle of Eger, It's siege, it's struggle, The shameful loss of the army of the Empreror, (Sultan) The great joy of King Ferdinand. The gallant Captain István Dobó, István Becskey, his mate and second officer, Gáspár Pető the good, third officer, István Zoltay, the fourth officer. Among them, there is scholar Gergely Bornemissza the good, The fifth officer of the good king (Ferdinand), János Figedy, the man of the Chapter (a type of religious organisation within the Church), Officer of the priests of Eger. A lot of janissaries had arrived, they camped at the castle, 150 000 men, the army of the Empreror (Sultan), His 16 old (great) cannons, His many peasants, not having a country (I don't know what he means by that, It could be a way to describe their large number). The pagans climbed the walls, They had broken many banners, They were shouting Allah, drums were rumbling, They were shooting or fencing, they were really "manning" (an expression in Hungarian, meaning someone acting strong and tough). They (defenders) shouted Jesus three times, Drums and trumpets were screaming, Guns were cracking loudly from both sides, Shiny weapons were glinting and clashing. They were horrendously fighting, fencing At all of the bastions, with a lot of bloodshed, A lot of them were wounded, screaming loudly, A lot of them fell with mortal wounds.

The wild thing is that we absolutely understand the whole text/lyrics/poem. I mean, yes now days we don't use some of these words, but know about them. And yes during the centuries we changed some letters in them (mostly the vowels) but the essence of our language is in the consonants. In those times Hungarians saw the Sultan and the Habsburg king/emperor the same bad leader of a country, that's (and because they were similar ranking ruler) why the emperor word. In English, I think they use o' or ol' words (coming from old) the same like in Hungarian, meaning mostly "big" or "great" and sometimes for the ages in the same time, just like us. This 'they had no home' thing was (I think) just a flick against the great opponent, who had much greather quantites, but had lot of really poor, half naked soldiers. Those times we flicking eachother really often, called eachother "dog", "infidel", "son of a b*tch"... we have a lot of evidences (letters) from those times, they were very rude sometimes. :D

My main takeaway is that István is a legendary name.

@Anotherhistoryenthusiast I think you misheard the part after the 16 great cannons. "Sok tarackjának ott száma nem vala."= "His many howitzers has no numbers. " I translated it to howitzer but "tarack" back in the day was a term for shor barrel cannons.

@@RambleOn07 - it’s just “Steven” in Hungarian. But you’re still right, as with John/Johannes in Western Europe, in the East everyone’s name seems to have been Steven/Stephan at that time. :D

@@uer9071 Older version of Hungarian but the funny thing is that today's Hungarians can understand even the older version of Hungarian pretty well. But there's a way older form of Hungarian than in this song. The 1200-1300s Hungarian is more different but Hungarians still understand it if they keep close attention to the text.
