In your discussion of a sword for an inexperienced person (the infamous Pewdiepie one), based on all the points you made, I was thinking that one of these would possibly be ideal. Two hands so you're not as reliant on strength and conditioning, complex hilt for protection, and designed for cuts which come more naturally than thrusts. I believe you settled on a longsword, but you had mentioned the advantages of a complex hilt, so this is best of both worlds.

Has to be one of the coolest looking sabers ever in my opinion.

I know many Hungarian sabres have cutout spines like that on their blades, and they definitely take inspiration from early kilij (not the T spine type, those are late 18thC)

Thanks for this video, Matt, liking a lot these Wallace Collection series. On the other hand, I wish that scholagladiatora's cinema billboard blesses us with a new hit about the peculiarities and pros/cons of Swiss sabers (Schnepf, as I've seen them refered as in a number of ocassions?) in detail, in the vein of other great blockbuster hits like "Falchions are not little battle axes", "Moro Kris - I like them" or "Pollaxes, halberds and bills". That swiss codpiece looks like it would by really uncomfortable to wear :O
@tyynymyy77707 жыл бұрын
I think it'd be much more uncomfortable to be around a person who wears that kind of codpiece. The original leather strapping has perished, but there are some examples in artwork and historical accounts about them, so we know how the Swiss wore them. The blades we're either perpendicular relative to your body or at slight upwards angle to create the image of youthfulness, fertility and willpower. However, extreme angles were often avoided, because one must always be ready for deep penetration. Sword blade pointing downwards has little to no use in most situations, although they were sometimes used to finish wounded opponents on a battlefield. In modern times that's known as teabagging.
@TheBaconWizard7 жыл бұрын
+Tyynymyy ahh yes, the old upward thrust from the codpiece, known in treatises as Morgenruhm or in English, Morning Glory.
@MrMorphine4827 жыл бұрын
I've played with Swiss sabers a bit and have very much wanted to pick up the Swiss saber made by Vladimir Cervenka. I think the term you're searching for on it is a Transitional Sword? The balance on most Swiss sabers make it decent for the chopping and slashing that some sabers do, but the lack of a curve in the blade means you can't do some of the tricky maneuvers other sabers can. Makes it a solid piece for more complex dueling though.

@the2ndsaint7 жыл бұрын
OK, I love the look of the Swiss saber, but the grip never looks quite long enough on them. Like, with a long sword you've typically got a pommel that you could grip, but with these the basket hilt looks like it would get in the way or force the hands too close together. Does that make sense? Am I just not seeing the proportions properly because it's in a video? Obviously they wouldn't be made if they weren't effective so I'm sure it's something I'm not seeing, but they always strike me as a bit odd.
@ZhouTie477 жыл бұрын
the2ndsaint You’re not seeing the proportions correctly, compare it to the handle of the smaller saber next to it which looks to be for one hand.

The raised back edge is far earlier that kilij, first example that I know of dates to 10th-11th century, found near Bulgarina village Yarebitsa: media.snimka.bg/5132/016518757-big.jpg (far left) The shape of crossguard on that one (short cross ending with two spheres) is characteristic for Magyar sabers of the period. They are also pretty common on mongolian sabres from 13th century.

scholagladiatoria Lol whats the problem with curvature. By the way, it has to be less than 50 cm on its own or just under 50 cm if its curved?

@ballerlarva42147 жыл бұрын
How much did that set you back and where did you get it?
@thedanksun94867 жыл бұрын
Baller Larva Mine isn't done yet, only the blade is ready. As for where, I used a custom smith Andrzej Mikiciak. As for the price, I dont want to go into details, but depending to what smith you go these go for thousands. That being said, only a handful of smiths can make it, and thats why these are hard to come by. If you want one just for the looks then LUTEL handicraft offers a budget version. It laks the finese of the original, but is significantly cheaper and well-made enough to be usable and functional

serious question: why call it a sabre if there's no way to use it but like a longsword
@SpecArch967 жыл бұрын
Hermes The blade. It is single edged and curved, like a sabre. Contemporary folk probably would have called it something else (maybe just langeschwert, seeing as they spoke german). Keep in mind that there ARE swiss sabres with one handed grips, which would've been called a Dusack at the time.
@MadNumForce7 жыл бұрын
Actually, the hilt pretty much prevents from using it like a typical longsword. It's certainly not like saber or broasword either, because it's really two handed. My bet is it would be best used with kenjutsu/kendo methods. It's a sort of european version of the katana, only with much better hand protection, and longer blade.
@FlavioLanfranconi7 жыл бұрын
Souces suggest hey were probably called "Schnepf" at the time. After the form of the break of the bird with the same name. The name Swissaber was introduced by a swiss curator in the last century. Will post the link to the source when i found it again (in german).
@ZhouTie477 жыл бұрын
MadNumForce Honestly thats what my inexperienced mind turned to when I heard “saber blade with a longsword style grip. I also can’t imagine using it in anyway but japanese style fencing with the way that guard would restrict your hands.
