Renal Tumor Ablation (CT guided Cryoablation of kidney Tumor)

Cryoablation of the renal tumor is performed under image guidance, such as CT guidance.
It is most often performed by an interventional radiologist on an outpatient basis.
The patient lies on the procedure table. The initial CT scan is done.
The location of the tumor in the kidney is determined and the cryoablation antennae entry site is marked on the skin.
Then, the access site is sterilized.
The skin and renal capsule are numbed with a local anesthetic at the access site. The access area is covered by a surgical drape.
A very small nick may be made in your skin to make it easier to pass the needle into the kidney tumor.
Then, the tip of cryoablation antenna is placed within the kidney tumor under CT guidance.
The alternative phases of freeze and thaw are then applied per interventionist preference.
Each cryoablation at least takes about 30 minutes, with intermittent imaging in between to check for ice ball size.
Additional time would be required if multiple antennas are required for larger tumors. The entire procedure usually takes 1-2 hours.
At the end of the procedure, the needle is removed and pressure is applied to stop any bleeding.
Subsequently, dressing is applied at the opening on the skin.
