6:40 listen to that expressive pianissimo, it's not just a glorious sound, it's part of a phrase turning into a word with so much heart. Glorious Tebaldi and spectacular Corelli. Together with Bastianini this excellent sounding recording is a historical performance.

I think this is the best all round recorded performance of Chenier. I'd go with the 1949 with Del Monaco if it were complete because Tebaldi is better there (with an utterly breathtaking fermata at Ora soave). But whether one prefers Del Monaco or Corelli is probably a matter of taste. For me, no Chenier can merge the poet and the soldier like Corelli. The studio version of this duet on his part is even better.

@ER1CwC it's a tough choice between Corelli and Del Monaco for me but on stage, I think Corelli would have won. Live, it's the best all-around performance of the opera for me, even with Tebaldi's less-than-perfect la mamma morta. In studio, the Decca is one of the greatest recordings of any opera, so well cast, conducted, recorded, exciting and moving.

​@@Orfeus80 I agree. For me, it's the best -- with the qualification that I do think Tebaldi had been better and that Corelli would get better. Bastianini is always a great presence. Love the Decca recording too.

​@@Orfeus80 Yes definitely, I like how he tamed the vibrato through hard work, and how he phrased both more broadly and with more variety. But he was obviously already moving in that direction here.

El mejor Andrea Chenier y la mejor Maddalena de la historia, Corelli en 1960 está en tu top con su voz vibrante como adelgaza el sonido cuando quiere. Otras sopranos tienen o color o timbre, Tebaldi tiene las dos cosas, timbre y color, y la calidad de la voz es incomparable, no lo digo yo esto, lo han dicho Mirella Freni quien dijo que en la calidad de la voz Tebaldi es unica, Martina Arroyo, Marilyn Horne, Birgit Nilsson y muchos mas colegas, en el minuto 6:40 en el ora soave hace un pianissimo celestial paradisíaco
