Callas had the dramatic intensity, and Tebaldi had just this amazingly gorgeous voice and sweet presence and temperament...they both brought something exceptionally wonderful to the art in each their own ways.

Tebaldi was never fully captured on recordings. The first time I saw her live was a revelation! It was a transformative experience that for the most part I hadn't gotten from recordings. But live... suddenly I understood! You just wanted to hear that sound forever and ever.

I have read many comments of yours and I am sure you are very competent in Lirica, now a question for you: I heard Anna Moffo to sing this aria finding her so sweet and melodic, What do you think about? Thanks
@stevecampo161810 жыл бұрын
I was fortunate to have seen Anna Moffo on a number of occasions in the mid-sixties and, less fortunately, into the seventies. Specifically, I saw her live in "La Traviata", "Lucia di Lammermor", "Romeo e Juliette" (with Franco Corelli), and "La Boheme" (with Luciano Pavarotti). At her best, she possessed a natural sound of uniquely lush, sensual beauty. If only that creamy sound consistently extended above the staff... if only she hadn't pushed herself to the point of disastrously over-working... if only, if only, if only. It's truly a shame that her career was so short. She could have made an easy transition from her early coloratura work into lyrico-spinto roles. In any case, I'll bet her 'Butterfly' was wonderful.

I never got the whole Callas vs. Tebaldi thing anyways. Rivals or no, they respected each other greatly. When Tebaldi was learning the role in La Giaconda, the Met GM recommended Zinka Milanov's version, knowing of the 'rivalry' between the two. A day later, he came back to find Tebaldi listening to Callas's version, asking him "Why didn't you tell me Maria's was the best?''

@Neanderthalgirl Callas made remarks appreciative of Tebaldi, and vice versa. Callas said, "I admire Tebaldi's tone; it's beautiful-also some beautiful phrasing. Sometimes, I actually wish I had her voice." Tebaldi was once given a recording for a role shewas to play. Aware of the alleged rivalry, he recommended another version. Days later, he went to visit Tebaldi, to find her sitting by the speakers, listening to Callas' recording. She then asked, "Why didn't you tell me Maria's was the best"

you are lucky, she is my favourite soprano and I think her Mimi is the ultimate but never saw her live !

You are most welcome, newtoopera. The two tenors were giants in their day and would be so today as well. DelMonaco had a more baritonal, dark sound while Corelli had the "squillo" and incredibly thrilling top notes. Tebaldi and Corelli sang together on tour toward the end of her career, as you may know. Both tenors were worthy partners to her level of singing. I never heard them live either but have heard live performances on tape and the excitement is simply indescribable.

Unfortunately, the less-music savvy media wanted to create a controversy. They did not realize that Callas and Tebaldi were 2 different voices types with overlapping repertoire and so they made up a "rivalry" out of thin air. There should be no jealousy among musicians. Sad, stupid, and ultimately destructive.
@paulvesely47736 жыл бұрын
It's what they do. Nothing of value to contribute . Pathetic when you consider the artists gift to us all and the pathetic commentary offered by critics.
@dttra5665 жыл бұрын
I agree they created that "rivalry" just to sell papers. In reality the two artists had utmost respect for each other and have openly declared so several times. That's what real artists do; when they are truly passionate and really accomplished at what they do, they will never be jealous of their "rivalry" but admiration for them.
