Insurpassable!!! Bjorling est sans conteste un des 3 plus grands interprètes de ce rôle, avec un timbre si chaud, expressif et une homogénéité si remarquable du grave à l'aigu sans que l'on remarque les "passages", sans parler de son contre-ut si exceptionnel. Quand à Tebaldi, Quelle richesse, quelle opulence! Ce timbre et cette musicalité si uniques qui font oublier un suraiguë toujours un peu juste. Même si Pavarotti et Freni, c'était très bien, Tebaldi et Bjorling sont au panthéon éternel des légendes de leur art.

This is the first time I've heard this performance, and the first time I've heard Tebaldi as the full throated spinto/dramatic soprano that she is here. Recordings I've heard of her do her no justice. Jussi of course has been one of those voices that defines Bel Canto; heugh, lyrical, note perfect, and effortless throughout his gorgeous immortal voice.

they are both spectacular. I daresay there is no soprano singing today like Tebaldi and no tenor like Bjoerling. His voice while not as big as say a Corelli or Tucker or de Monaco but he had just a sweetness and beauty that I've never heard from anyone else. I wish I had heard him live.

Actually Jussi didn't have a very dependable high C but his voice was beautiful. He often sang arias with high C's a full tone lower. His high C here is good but a bit overpowered by Tebaldi.

@@cwstars Di Stefano is one of the greatest ever. Maria Callas was a great actress more then a singer. Her voice his often so "stridula" as my very gifted musician aunt Amalia used to say. This duo by Renata and Jussi is breathtaking even after so many years. The clarity of the voices the mastery of their art is unparalleled.

While I was watching this clip, memories flooded in my mind about the very moment I truly fell in love with opera. I was dating a lady who was going to the Manhattan School of Music who later became my wife. She asked me to join her in watching this scene from La Bohème in a performance at the school.- She told me the story-line, and it involved a frail young lady who was dying from consumption, and she was singing a duet with the tenor lead role, portraying a strapping healthy young man. As fate would have it, the man playing the lead role was a short skinny sickly looking Korean guy, and the supposedly frail lady was played by a tremendously overweight black lady who looked as strong and as big as a house. Before they uttered one sound, I thought to myself "How stupid is this going to be?"-Yes, I thought the looks of these two singers would just make this a musical disaster. Well, when that Korean tenor started to sing,-the power of his voice made him 10 feet tall, and better looking than Brad Pitt. And when that black lady sang so sweetly, she became as delicate as a beautiful wilting flower. Yes, music transitioned the reality of those two singers right in front of my very eyes, and more importantly,-inside of my heart.
