This weekend I followed this video and part 2 to change the rocker cover on my Clio 3. Absolutely fantastic stuff. I have no clue what I’m doing, but managed anyway and learned a ton in the process. I changed the whole rocker cover as it was basically the same price as the gaskets and I didn’t t have to clean the old one. Accessing the bolts were way harder than it looked in the video, but I’m really happy I did it anyway. Thanks a lot.

Well, that explains the oil creep around my engine! The whole thing is caked in old oil, I was initially worried it was a head-gasket issue but this makes far more sense as I have no other symptoms that are typically associated with a blowing head-gasket. Amazing job man! Continue like that! I was thinking about to do some jobs on my Clio and here you are, new amazing video is out! So you have a 2005 Clio, i have got a 2010 restyled Clio. I know that in mine there is a d4f engine but I don't know if is the same as yours. Did they change something in these 5 years?
@SocketsAndSideburns2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Casper. As long as your D4F isn't the D4FT (the turbocharged version) then it should be the same as this one. The 740 is very similar to the 722 and on from there they made small changes but nothing major. The whole of this video works on Clio 3s with D4Fs. The late model Clio 2s were basically a testing ground for the Clio 3s I think. If you look at the changed that were made I think it was mostly based around warranty issues on the D4F 712s.

Hi, first off amazing video, never seen one with so much detail and knowledge. I wanted to ask a question, if it's OK with you, about the symptoms of the failing or failed PCV/rocker cover internal system? I've got the same issues like mayonnaise in the PCV pipes, the leak from the rocker cover etc, but I also have the added issue of what sounds like tappets/rockers, rather loud and makes it sound like a PD130 diesel 😅. I was just wondering if this was the same case with your clio maybe or what else it could be, as a friend's garage said it is the cambelt tensioner, however my clio is only on 62k. Thank you for the great video, and in advance for any help.
@SocketsAndSideburns29 күн бұрын
Hello and thank you for the comment. Mayo in the pipes is not uncommon and neither is the oil leak. As you can see in my video on the PCV system there is isn't really anything to fail just simply block up over time. As for the oil leak you will have to decide how severe it is. The tappets are generally a soft ticking rather than a harsh noise, I would be amazed if they were needing adjustment that badly at 62k. How old is the Clio? The timing belt tensioners can and do break down. I have a video on changing the timing belts on these. You also can actually remove the middle timing belt cover to see the tensioner and may be able to more easily listen to it while manually turning over the engine.
@Ihatepeanutbutter1226 күн бұрын
@SocketsAndSideburns thank you for the reply, and apologies for the delayed response. As it turns out, the cambelt has gone, so thank you for the suggestion. I think its common on 10 plate clios. Unfortunately it's an extremely expensive repair, as there is a high possibility that it has bent valves too, at the minimum, however I was lucky when it went as I was pulling off of my driveway. I'd do it myself, but I just don't have the time. Many thanks again for the troubleshooting and help.

Excellent video..many thanks. One question for you, as I would appreciate your advice. On my Clio the crank has become misplaced with respect to the camshaft, and the timing belt is off. Is there a position for the camshaft to be in, that will make it safe to rotate the crank without damaging the valves…and if there is, in what position would the cam timing mark then be.. Thank you. John..Bristol
@SocketsAndSideburns4 ай бұрын
Hello John. By the way you are talking I'm assuming you understand where the timing marks are and understand how to retime the engine. I assume the camshaft is set at the timing mark (twelve O'clock, there is an arrow on the rocker cover) and that the crank has moved away from its mark (Six O'clock, mark on the sump). I guess the crank can't have moved more than a few teeth, I would just move it back the shortest distance back to the TDC marker. In regards to damage just bear in mind that it already moved this distance itself anyway you are just putting it back and also you are turning by hand so if there is valve to piston contact nothing should bend unless you force it. I am actually currently editing a timing belt video for this car which I hope to release next week.

Not easy but it can be done. Describes the entire job.... I live in Africa in a very small country. No way I am going to get the gasket set. Can this be done without renewing the gaskets?
@SocketsAndSideburns5 ай бұрын
It depends on what you are doing the job for. If it is to cure an oil leak then it will be the gaskets that are at fault so they will obviously need to be renewed. If its for any other reason then you can try reusing the gaskets but they may leak. You will need the silicone sealant either way though.
@hendrikdebruin40125 ай бұрын
@@SocketsAndSideburns Thank you for even taking the trouble to reply. The engine is very noisy all of a sudden - been building up to a constant whine over 2 months. So it could be the clearance settings? But am going to start it without any belts just to make sure. I have read somewhere that if you soak rubber parts in sunflower oil they become soft and pliable again. Could try that with the spark plug and inlet seals? Your videos are truly the best on YT. I cannot buy any of the tools here so I will just do the best I can. That electric socket machine you have is truly a time saver. Thanks again.
@SocketsAndSideburns5 ай бұрын
You are very welcome. I would say incorrect valve clearances would more likely sound like ticking or tapping rather than a whine. Start with belts off as you say and start it to see if the noise goes. Does the vehicle have Air Con? When was the last oil and filter change? When was the last timing belt change?
@hendrikdebruin40125 ай бұрын

It makes sense to apply a bead of silicone on rear mounting bolts. But why Renault recomends to put also a bead around camshaft bearing? The seal doesn't make the seal already?
@SocketsAndSideburns2 жыл бұрын
Yes the exhaust bolts are actually inside the gasket area so these are essential. As for the bearing cap I'm not entirely sure. The gasket does go around it. If I had to guess I would think it due to the curved surface and then the sudden flat the gasket doesn't always mate down all the way.
@jacknapier17762 жыл бұрын
It makes sense. That's probably the reason. So, the silicone bead should match the seal line? In the service manual it looks like it should

What a ball ache just to get the cam cover off, are the cam cover gaskets prone to leaking on Renaults? I’m changing the timing belt and dephaser “and abs module” at the moment and seen the back of the engine and gearbox is all oiled up and can’t make out where it’s coming from, been told it’s unlikely to be the head gasket on a mk3 1.6 megane and they’ve suggested the cover “megane group on fb” just interested in your thoughts before I remove it… at this rate I wish I just removed the engine to work on it, fiddly French car
@SocketsAndSideburns Жыл бұрын
Its definitely the most likely place for the leak. When you start stripping to get at the cover you might see better.
@GaryTaylorvw Жыл бұрын
Got more light in there today and it’s coming from the top of the engine passenger side corner, so looks like it is the gasket, quite a lot of oil there, not doing it for a few days though need a break 😂 had a nightmare with this timing belt and ABS module, all done now except couldn’t bleed brakes properly as passenger side calliper bleed nip snapped 🤦🏼♂️ so driving got check abs and skid sign and wouldn’t let me go faster than 27mph, so I’ve had to unplug the module so can at least drive normally until the new calliper comes… next time I’m paying a mechanic 😂

Would you care to tell where's the Camshaft position Sensor located, my OBD2 Scanner show that I need to change it, I have exactly the same car but I can't find it's location.
@SocketsAndSideburns7 ай бұрын
If you have the D4F 722 there is no camshaft sensor. The engine uses a flywheel sensor which is essentially the same as a crankshaft position sensor. Perhaps that is what your reader is referring too. The sensor is located near the thermostat looking down into the flywheel.
@SiyabongaFoba-f1p7 ай бұрын
@@SocketsAndSideburns that is much possible because even when I such it up on the internet it shows the Crankshaft instead and it also detects the MAF sensor being damaged and I surely know it doesn't have one instead it has a MAP SENSOR which the basically do the similar job, thank you for responding to my question 👏👍👍.

Do you mean the oil is in cylinder 2s spark plug well, where the HT lead goes? If that is the case then yes it will be the spark plug tube seals, you can change just them without removing the rocker cover as I show in the video.
