Spaniard here. The Church isn't that absurdily powerful nowadays (some influence? maybe, but no more than the US), and as the movie explains the authorities detected the infection of the dog and tracked it to the building. It's with the second movie that the Church has more presence, with the priest that joins the assault team.

Christianity has pretty much lost any and all influence in countries above Mexico, west of at least the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia, and Russia. Islam seems to be the only theistic religion gaining influence.

I've never been able to watch the Rec movies myself, but I remember having a VHS tape (can't remember for what film, might have been Sphere or Mission To Mars) that had a trailer for the first Rec movie at the beginning, and the dragging scene at the end was actually a part of the trailer.

I'd say that REC 4 is indeed an overall disappointing finale, but it had the welcome return of Angela (the gorgeous Manuela Velasco), some rather good action and an ambiguous ending that I found okay. *SPOILERS" Plus, just having Angela freed from the curse she was under was a relief, for me. The biggest thing I didn't like about the movie is they actually completely dismissed the diabolical aspect of the contagion, which is a huge shame.
