Let me tell you how blatantly Sony butchered Peyo's work. When he died, he said in his will that his creation could be expanded upon and continued in comics, series and movies. The only movie that did the “beloved character from a cartoon goes to the real world and teams up with a B lister slumming it for a paycheque” shit right was Sonic and that’s only because Sonic and Tom had equal focus and Tom’s story well intersected with Sonic’s. Tom’s story about wanting to move on from his hometown and having to learn why the community needs him tied in well with Sonic’s arc of finding a home within the community and gaining a family, how the hell does “a guy coming to grips with being a dad” and Smurfs escaping Gargamel in New York City in anyway intersect or work
