RENO, NEVADA, ROAD TRIP PART 2 EAST TO DONNER PASS

Driving from Clearlake, CA, to Donner Pass along Highway 20 offers a diverse and scenic journey through Northern California’s varied landscapes.
Starting from Clearlake, I am surrounded by the serene waters of Clear Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake entirely within California. The town is nestled in a valley with gentle, rolling hills covered in oak woodlands and chaparral. As you leave Clearlake, you'll head northeast on Highway 20.
The road meanders through a landscape of mixed woodlands. You’ll pass through small communities and agricultural areas, where vineyards and orchards are common. The terrain here is characterized by rolling hills with a mix of open grasslands and forested areas.
As you continue eastward, you’ll reach the town of Williams, which sits in the heart of the Sacramento Valley. The landscape flattens out considerably as you drive through this vast agricultural region. The Sacramento Valley is one of California's most productive agricultural areas, so you’ll see expansive fields of crops like rice, almonds, tomatoes, and sunflowers.
In Williams, Highway 20 intersects with Interstate 5. After crossing I-5, the landscape continues with more flat farmland. Depending on the season, the fields may be lush and green or golden brown. The valley is framed by distant mountain ranges, creating a picturesque backdrop.
Continuing east, you’ll drive through the Colusa National Wildlife Refuge, where seasonal wetlands provide habitat for migratory birds. This stretch of the journey offers a chance to see diverse bird species, especially waterfowl. The road here is straight and flat, lined with levees and irrigation canals.
As you approach the city of Colusa, the Sacramento River becomes a prominent feature. Colusa itself is a quaint town with historic buildings and a rural charm. The river and its riparian zones bring a lushness to the area, contrasting with the surrounding farmland.
Leaving Colusa, the landscape remains predominantly agricultural as you head towards Yuba City. You'll pass through smaller towns and communities, with orchards and fields stretching to the horizon. The Sutter Buttes, often referred to as the world’s smallest mountain range, rise unexpectedly from the valley floor to the east, creating a unique geological feature.
In Yuba City, you’ll cross the Feather River and head towards the Sierra Nevada foothills. The terrain begins to change as you leave the flat valley floor and enter rolling foothills. The road becomes more winding as it ascends gradually. You’ll notice a transition from agricultural land to more natural landscapes, with oak-studded hills and grasslands.
Approaching the town of Grass Valley, the environment becomes increasingly forested. Grass Valley, along with nearby Nevada City, is known for its gold rush history. The towns are surrounded by dense pine forests and have a charming, historic feel with well-preserved 19th-century architecture.
Continuing on Highway 20, you'll pass through the picturesque town of Nevada City. This area is rich in history and natural beauty, with Victorian-era buildings, art galleries, and boutique shops. The surrounding landscape is lush with mixed conifer forests, featuring pine, fir, and cedar trees.
As you leave Nevada City, the ascent into the Sierra Nevada becomes more pronounced. The road winds through dense forests, with frequent elevation changes and sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. This part of Highway 20 offers some of the most scenic drives, especially as you get closer to the high country.
You’ll pass through the Tahoe National Forest, where the landscape is dominated by towering trees and rugged terrain. The air becomes cooler and crisper as you gain altitude, and in the winter months, snow is common.
Approaching Donner Pass, the landscape opens up to offer dramatic vistas of the Sierra Nevada range. The pass itself is named after the infamous Donner Party, and the area is steeped in history. You’ll find granite outcrops, alpine meadows, and pristine mountain lakes. The road here can be steep and winding, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
Donner Pass, at an elevation of about 7,057 feet, is a significant landmark. It offers stunning panoramic views and a sense of accomplishment as you reach one of the higher points in the Sierra Nevada. The area is also popular for outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, and snowboarding in the winter.
The drive from Clearlake to Donner Pass on Highway 20 is a journey through some of Northern California's most diverse and beautiful landscapes. From the tranquil shores of Clear Lake, through the agricultural heart of the Sacramento Valley, to the historic towns of the Sierra Nevada foothills, and finally to the breathtaking heights of Donner Pass, this route offers a rich tapestry of natural and cultural sights. You were in my neck of the woods once you got to the I5 junction on the 20 at Williams. I’m south of there in Willows. Yes, we have a very unique world here as well. I miss it when I’m gone for sure.
