OOooooooh!, Jeff. That was probably the most thought provoking video that you and Pixie have produced to date. I now have to go out to see if my CSC2000's transfer switch operates if the inverter is switched off. Renogy may not be the big name in van builds/overland rigs/ off road /off grid yet, but they are certainly great quality products at way less than sterling/victron prices. Good choice, good video

I'm a little puzzled to be honest, after discovering the inverter I have has a built-in auto switchover mechanism ... same as yours but the 3000 version... I don't know where to run the lead to from the inverters AC input... do I remove the original hook up lead that comes out of my breaker unit that is fed from the outside hook up point or tap into it with some wago connectors ? Or is there another way ? My van is a motorhome by the way so it has a little circuit breaker board that controls the electrics

Hey Jeff, brilliant video which has saved me a lot of time and faffing, sorry if it's in the video and I missed it but when running the electrics on shore power thru the inverter are you still limited to 1000 or 2000w that the inverter is rated for? Also I don't have a consumer unit after my inverter as I thought the inverter had its own cut outs, is this not correct?

Hi, maybe you could answer a question. If I wasn't using a split consumer unit and wanted to be able to power all sockets from the inverter, is it just a case of connecting the ac input to a spare socket then the ac ouput from the inverter back into the shore power input. If that makes sense. Thanks (great video)

I believe up to ,16 amps but you would have to check to be sure. If it's a 10 amp pass through then yes 2000w is about your max.

I'm sorry for sounding thick, but I'm struggling to understand why the power out of the inverter has to go back to the MCB box before powering back out to the sockets. If the power comes into the MCB from hook up, then out to inverter input, why cant the inverter 'output' just wire straight to the first socket in the chain powering all sockets?
@andrewstafford166
@andrewstafford166 5 ай бұрын
They provide protection if the inverter is running as they are downstream of it. The Shore power protection is upstream of the inverter so has only an effect when shore power is live. Yes this creates a level of "double " protection but without it you would have no protection when shore power is off and you are using the inverter power exclusively.

I want to top off batteries and plugged into shore power. Power source check out good. The batteries never get beyond 85% or 250. Either with the inverter turned on or off. The only drain on batteries is a Dometic refrig which isn’t that much draw. I've been plugged into shore power for 3 days. Also, I had in the past had battery readings of 100% or 296. I was a bit unsure about that, so sent an email to Renogy and this was their response:- All of our inverters will still produce their rated power output even if they are connected to an AC input. This means that the 1000W inverter will still produce 1000W even when connected to mains power. So it seems not, which is a bit rubbish

Dan, I’ve got the exact same Q. If the inverter uses the transfer switch to alternate between sources before distributing the output via MCB/RCD then to power outlets would this work?
@kyaorrb
@kyaorrb Жыл бұрын
@@erickerr4960 hey so from speaking to some people who’ve done this before, the way to do it is have shore hookup > rcd/mcb > inverter > sockets. This is to protect the inverter. The renogy invert has surge and leak protection built in, so there is no need to have another consumer unit after the inverter (you could it would just be pointless). Then after the inverter you basically just wire up extension leads to sockets. This is what I’m going with :)

Why not put shore power from exterior shorepower socket straight to inverter then inverter output to consumer unit? If on, inverter would power van from battery and then when shorepower attached it would go to bypass, and if you lost or had intermittant mains supply it would swith to inverting mode. If off it would still work with shorepower but not power from battery until turned on.

Mine lasted exactly fourteen months from the moment it was professionally installed. The warranty for this product is one year. I contacted Renogy customer service bc an inverter is supposed to last something like twelve to fifteen years according to current design standards. Renogy informed me after asking me for photos that my unit certainly had malfunctioned but since it was out of warranty they cannot help me. Read that again if you are considering this for your van or camper. Mine is at least the third unit I’ve heard of wearing out before the fifteen month mark. It’s almost as if they are made just good enough to put outlast the warranty by a bit and die. I’m making a video about this product and the customer service of this company soon. For $400 more I could have had a Victron that would have lasted fifteen years. Now I’ve cost myself an extra $700 for this unit that is of poor design. Don’t buy this product and limit how much Renogy equipment you install in your build bc they will not stand behind their products if you encounter issues.

You have an unsafe system. Although you have a RCD on the output of the inverter it will not operate and thus not protect against electric shock . For the RCD to function when the inverter is operating in stand alone mode, the inverter needs a neutral to earth bond. The Renogy inverter does not automaticly make this bond. The Renogy pass through inverter must not be used in a permanent install powering multiple outlets and appliances. The output , in stand alone mode, no hook up power, is 120 volts on both the live and neutral with respect to earth. Mike

Without expanding too much, there are SO many electrical safety issues here. RCD on inverter wont trip due to a lack of neutral - earth bond. Hardly any DC or AC cable protection from metal abrasion. Back feed issues into the grid. Chassis grounding and AC earthing are TOTALLY different A generator 4 pole transfer switch is a better option ( Make Break Make) A test button does NOT prove an RCD will trip. They trip by detecting an INCOMING imbalance between polarity and ground potential difference which needs a reference to earth. They dont trip on your side ...on the INCOMING side. BE CAREFUL !!
