Hey matt. I built 21 underground complexes in the last 11 years . PLEASE READ . You need to reinforce the inside with a welded roll cage type skeleton support inside the conex box . Then use gravel and playground sand around the box once in place in the ground before burying it. Plz research it. I seen a few that collapsed before they called us in.

Welded cage? For a few inches or even a few feet of dirt, a wooden interior frame would be fine… just build it like a house. 16.5” on center, and integrate the shelving into the studs. 2x6 or 2x10 ceiling joists if 2x4s make you nervous.

Reinforcing the inside is the way to go to keep the roof from buckling inward from weight on the outside. Also, running some tubing to keep the vent fan wouldn't have been a bad idea either.

Matt, you really need to throw grass seed all over that berm. The grass will root and make a solid mass with the dirt, preventing it from erosion over time. You can already see the erosion cracks at the top of the berm.

Matt; couple of ideas. 1 make a tee shirt about the ranch and the eclipse and ONLY available for the people that go. sub idea, include one shirt with a purchase of a spot. 2 extend your 2 x 4 shelf supports up to the roof to help support even more and maybe the upper shelves side to side as well to give a touch of extra support for the walls.

If you can't get your hands on a lot of rec poles, you could use old shot tractor tires filled with dirt stacked on top of each other to extend the berm. You definitely wouldn't be able to get them as high, but I feel like you could stack them 6 ft high and fill them with dirt and they would be solid.

Very cool, but I really think you should have kept the turbine vent. Even with a few inches of dirt on top, it's going to get hot in there. And at night in the summer, all the soil will retain the heat so it will never really cool down inside. They do have solar powered mini-split heat pumps, so you could easily install one of those and some solar panels and have a well lit, heated and cooled place!

The main reason you were burning through was technique. Lay the rod at a shallower angle, 45 degrees or less, short arc, and focus on the thicker metal. Make a slight weave, about 3/16" or so, and spend more time on the thick metal, don't travel too far onto the thin metal or you'll just be adding unnecessary heat to it. Try a 3/32 6010.

Did you consider compressing the berm before putting poles in? You should put up a frame covered with butcher paper above the poles and at the ends, so you can see evidence of any bullets missing all your walls. If you are actually only putting 4" of dirt on the roof, you easily could have left the roof vent on and it would help you ventilate the place as well as monitor the actual depth. You really like making extra work for yourself. My dad (the Air Force Full Colonel) had the phrase THIMK up on his office wall to remind people to THINK.

There's gaps in your 3rd wall Also it's tough, nothing beats a natural valley for a range, like the demo ranch range you've used the past few years in the valley new the abandoned mansion

When welding thin metal just use short "tacks" , do it like lug nuts , 4 corners then the middles so on and so forth ...... or turn the machine down a tad

Matt, you should get Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch to help you design a shoot house and other cool range thoughts.

Should have just extended the vent piping higher and left it to still have ventilation into the conex box.

Once your range is done, you should make a shirt that says"feel the berm" to celebrate.😄

You should put a sign on the back of the pole wall that reads Carrikerwood

Sealing the container was a good thing but the supports should be on the inside, the dirt could break away the welds and still cause a cave in. With the support on the inside it would be capable of holding much more weight.
