So regarding Rental. I'm pretty sure the Rental Man was stuck in the house, and then fled the house by fooling Umi into doing that ritual, which allowed him to steal her body and leave the house. If you compare the face Umi makes at the end to the expression of the Rental Man, they're both exactly the same, which is why I think this happened.

Here’s the story, this dude comes walking up to the door like how you said, and I returned the favour after wiping and just intensely stared him down in return. Like it was a random staring contest, and then a third guy walks in asking the other guy what’s taking so long. Then it’s just silent, the dude on the other side of the stall looks at me with this deadass look in his eye, and then looks at his friend. Who finally asks what the hell he’s doing. And all this guy outside the stall says is: “Having a staring contest with this random guy i found on the toilet.” in a monotone voice. Something we laugh about over drinks still to this day whenever it comes up

In the birdwatching one, the location is called Mt. Pallas. That name is the most common epithet of the goddess Athena (written as Pallas Athena). She is very strongly associated with owls, they’re her main symbol throughout her mythology. So, that’s a roundabout hint from the developer to expect an owl.

Oh man I loved that rental man game. The aesthetic felt like a good harmony between both PS1 and N64 tech, had a little bit of that Animal Crossing vibe with the characters while also maintaining the spooky vibe of older horror games. I love that it just ended like an inattentive kid's daydream, leaving you to wonder if the house really was bad news or just Umi spacing out. I think a minor joke that might go over people's heads is that her name is Umi, the word for Ocean in Japanese, her dad mentioned the ocean and there were seagulls (jp: umineko) for ambience in the opening scene. The humor was quite good for a short game about a house that likely won't let you leave.

the house *did* not let Umi leave, sadly. if you pay close attention to the faces of Umi and rental-dental man you will notice that the face Umi makes at the end sequence belongs to the latter. he tricked and trapped the girl inside that haunted house and than tells "nah, i don't think we should go inside the house" to her parents

DUDE! So some friends and I made up our own criptid when I was a teen called Wereowl. It was the most horrifying thing for something we just made up. I struggled to walk out to my car that night (I live way out in the country) Can you imagine a humanoid owl hunched over a mangled animal snacking and when you startle it, it's head spins 180 degrees to face you without moving it's body. Those huge round eyes staring through your soul!

Rental was my favorite of the 3. I like that it wasn't too grim and the art was cute. I also liked how weird it felt for the character to be told that they had to do a ritual and how they winged it. Surreal I think is the word. Bun!
