In recent years E Bikes have taken the city streets by storm, so much so that you can now rent them in some cities, such as Bristol in the UK. But are they really better than the superbikes our ex-pro presenters are used to riding around town? Conor and Manon find out, as they race around Bristol!

Theft is a big risk to cycling in a city. I have a single speed cruiser brake bike and an Amsterdam bike that I lock up at the bus station. The bikes are about $200 each, and the spot has video surveillance, and nobody would expect a bike where I park it, and I have two locks and two cables on the bikes. I still feel relieved to see my commuter bikes every day after work. If I had Connor's Canyon bike it would likely be in a plexiglass locked case at home, only to be used in perfect weather without traffic. Never a commute.

Ok does anyone else make that noise going over cobblestones. I do because it’s funny and all my riding friends just look at me as if I’m 8 years old. I think for around town the E bike rental is great idea because you have a network of them around. Just grab one and go then return it shop or eat then get another one. But I love the Canyon super bike not for town use because you have to lock it up and hope everything is safe with it when you come back after shopping or eating. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.

At least here its $20/hr to rent an ebike. So while more affordable that a Superbike, it's for sure better to buy a decent bike even your own ebike than to rent our ebikes. $2000 for an ebike here would be 100 hours or about 3.5 months of 30 minute commutes to and from work or if you go for groceries and do other errands or rides. I guess depends how long your commute is. But if you just occasionally rent here it's not crazy bad.

Seems like a great idea for a hire bike, putting a mid-drive in then just going for a single speed - let the motor handle the torque, why not? The gearing choice seems odd though ( 0:36 ) - given that these things top out at 15.5mph you'd think that a ratio of 2:1 or perhaps a little more might be adequate. The gear they have on there looks more like 3:1 (obviously no way of telling exactly) but the point is, the lower the gear the higher the pedal rpm for a given power and gradient and better the mid-drive motor will cope with it. If they'd geared it so you were doing 80-90rpm at 15.5mph it would have more grunt going up those steep hills...
@The1trueDave
@The1trueDave 2 жыл бұрын
@Colin Deal I'm not sure the market is entirely 'non-cyclists', a good chunk of it will be people who just don't currently have their bike with them for whatever logistical reason. I take your point about clothing but take the lower end of that range, 80rpm is not out of sight especially with mechanical assistance. Also, while that 10-12kg weight penalty is significant, it's only 10-15% in terms of the 'system' (bike+rider) weight. If you're trying to do electric on a budget that's just the price you pay.

Your video above all shows how unenjoyable riding in a city is when compared to rural areas. I used my bike to commute across London for over 25 years but having moved to a semi-rural place almost 10 years ago, I realise how much more fun and less dangerous it is to ride outside urban areas.Time for the Gov't and the local authorities to make biking in cities and populated areas safer.

The opposite. With some rare exceptions, I find biking downtown to be far safer and more comfortable than biking in rural or suburban areas. The drivers look for me, see me, and know how to go around me. I have a bike lane most places and when I need to ride in the middle of the road the drivers are accomodating and I can keep up with traffic speed. Most rural areas the road is 2 lanes unmarked with no shoulder and rumble strips on the edge. The drivers rip down at 55 mph and are either spooked to see you, outright hostile, or entirely unaware. The Bow River Parkway is beautiful. It's the best road I've ever ridden. But it's like that because it's a cycling tourism hub and most rural areas are not like that.

Great fun. I use a Gocyle for my London commute and it is perfect for that. And room for a big bag on the front. Like you say, wouldn't want to take my road bike to work. Some days I do laps round Richmond Park to mix my training and surprisingly lap time can be as quick as a road bike with the push it gives on the hills averaging speed out. Though it is very easy to spin out with its lowish gearing. Still I can get a decent workout on it as over the 25kph assist speeds it's 10Kg more than my road bike.

These bikes are optimized for high speed. They don't offer low gears like a MTB does, which would have made the steep section without problems
@Mububban23
@Mububban23 2 жыл бұрын
On a road bike, your speed varies from 45kmh on a rolling section, to 10-15kmh up a hill. With an ebike, you really do max out around 25-30kmh as they're not built for speed (except pricey e-road bikes), but assuming you have some gears, you'll still be doing 20kmh+ up the hills. So the ebike will have a true "average" speed with minimal variation, whereas the roadie will see your speed rising and dropping much more based on terrain. Both brilliant in different ways.
