Neal is old school and a GAWD. And a survivor..... Late 70s to early/mid 80s REO SPEEDWAGON music (with Richrath) FOREVER! 🔥🙏🎸🥁

Agree but did you know that part of the solo was “borrowed” by Kevin Cronin from Crosby, Stills and Nash song Love The One You’re With? Kevin recently admitted it. But Neal smashes it and it is awesome.

Neal was my neighbor in Belleville,Illinois. I was good friends with his brother...Randy! He also had twin brothers..Mark & Mike! Whenever i came over to his house he let me sit on the piano bench and watch him play! They lived on Cambridge Drive 8 & i lived on 23 with a concrete swimming pool. He is the best organist in the world!! He taught me how to play the piano. Thank You...Mr. Doughty! Always Be Blessed!

Neal is a great keyboard artist. Thanks for all your years of REO. They could not have been there without you! On that same note...Alan was a awesome drummer. I much prefer the 70's music that REO created. Not a power ballad fan. REO will always be Gary, Neal, Alan, Bruce and Kevin. The COW album is absolutely my favorite!

Where is the rest of the interview? My musical start was similar to Neal's except my mom made me take PIANO lessons. I never got good on piano, but I did learn about harmonies, and some music theory, so that like him, when the Beatles appeared, I taught myself guitar, using the musical ideas I had learned from piano. I NEVER learned to properly read music, and I'm sure Neal can. Also, I never got rich or famous playing music, but I DID eventually get myself an honest to goodness Hammond tonewheel organ and twin rotor Leslie speaker, which I LOVE. No offense to Neal, but it was first Jimmy Greenspoon, then Jon Lord, who got me hooked on the Hammond/Leslie magnificence. My first instrument remains the guitar though. There's a lesson in all my rambling ................ whatever musical instrument you finally hook up with, play it with passion, love and joy. Music is a universal language that we all can enjoy and help us all connect in one way or another. Play it the best you can, and if you aren't THE best, don't worry. Someone out there is wishing they could play as well as you can. Just be a good ambassador and bring them into the fold.

You cut off the interview right in the middle.....where the hell is the rest of it? Twits. I also agree with Mr. Gary Richrath (R.I.P.) about the ballads. HATED the ballad turn the band took because these guys could rock n roll with the best of them. Roll with the Changes and Don't Let Him Go were great examples. Who in the band thought ballads were the way......? Loved Neal Doughty's music and personality....great guy.
@Tobytitos4 жыл бұрын
Yeah where's the rest?!? WHERE oh WHERE?!? As for the ballads, hmm. Ya know, Chicago hates the ballad-y stuff they did with David Foster-but it has kept them touring for another 30+ years. You could argue that without the ballads that helped make them huge, REO would not be out as much or at at all. And for me, I like the ballads as a counterpoint to the balls-out rockers.

Great discussion, and great attitude about music and the teaching thereof! I think Neal D is the only surviving member of the original REO (last one still in the band), although maybe Bruce Hall was there, too (Kevin Cronin might as well be a founding member, although technically he isn’t). And yes, I *did* know the origin of the name “REO Speedwagon” - I’ve seen a real one at a classic-car show.

I admire his skill and artistry greatly...I wish you a very Happy New Year Neil & the whole REO Familia! Hugs, d.crow from the Rocky Mountains

Neal is an interesting guy. Probably the smartest member. I would enjoy a long conversation with him. After he leaves REO he should consider speaking to groups about his experience in a rock band for all those years. I'm tired of hearing Gary this and Gary that. Gary should have been grateful to even be in this band. I wouldn't mind being the #2, 3, or 4 member. Cronin played his part. It so happened he was the singer. Everyone should get over it and admit the ballads were rock gold.
