I can’t even express how much I missed this. Katherine was the first doll customizer I ever saw/followed and was sad (but also happy for her) when she announced her hiatus. Since she’s been getting into the groove of parenthood I’ve gotten into quite a few other doll artists and while I’ve also fallen in love with them I missed the OG doll artist (for me anyway)

See the problem is doll clothes and human clothes aren't easily transferable skills. The kinds of patterns and shapes you would use are different on a human body that moves and whose shape changes as they move than a doll who doesn't move often and even if they do the body doesn't shift and change. While she could make cute clothes for her child it would take her learning completely nrw skills

I'm Korean, and when this video popped up in my recommendations I absolutely had to click on it! This is such a beautiful interpretation of a 노리개! And since I was used to seeing them just as accessories, them being used on hair was unexpected in a great way. And the little 족두리 and 버선 were so adorable.The 한복 and the patterns on them were gorgeous, and the 연지 was such a nice touch. I could see all the dedication in every detail. I also thought the pins in the hair looked cool, since they kind of look like jade beads, and thus adds to the overall theme. (I was way to excited about this and got carried away lol, I think this is my longest ever comment on youtube) + I thought of some recommendations for the back of the hair... what about a sheer black cloth on the back, like the ones on the back of 탈 masks? But maybe it could look like a veil.. or you could bring the remaining hair together, tuck it in and add a patterned 댕기 or ribbon? Just my two cents! This video feels like the best 추석 present, I loved it to bits! Thank you for the awesome video!

When doing fabric transfers a good way I avoid warping is as soon as I pull the iron up, I go over it with a marble square. Some people have gotten them at home improvement places (Counter top samples) but I use a marble coaster (from amazon). The coolness and weight of the marble helps correct the fabrics need to warp under the heat. It will come out nice and flat!

I always admire how delicate you are with cultures that aren’t necessarily your own by blood- your enthusiasm is so refreshing, it’s very clear how much you love learning about them just from the way you speak ! As someone who is white and also interested in other cultures, I always find it hard to reach a balance between adoration and appropriation, you strike it beautifully each time :D Much love to you, your family, and to anyone reading this 🤍
@joshienieto35842 жыл бұрын
I thought culture appropriation was the exploitation of minor cultures. As in you adopt an element of a culture, claiming it's yours or use it in a disrespectful/stereotypical way. I know most ppl aren't like this, so if I see a white person or any other person that isn't part of my culture, dressed in native attire. I never get offended, I quite honestly think it's silly to be offended by something like that when ppl just want to know, not mock. Or find our attire pretty and want to try it out themselves.
@drewisdreaming2 жыл бұрын
@@joshienieto3584 for sure, but i think it's more in the sense that a lot of people will do things like wear traditional attire that has a lot of meaning and history behind it without doing any research or having any knowledge of that purely because they think it's pretty or aesthetic. kind of like people getting tattoos of words in other languages to look "cool and exotic" without even knowing what the word translates to. the issue isn't necessarily with appreciating the beauty of other cultures, it's with appropriating it for yourself (ESPECIALLY if you profit off of it) without showing due diligence or respect to the many other aspects of such things other than aesthetic appearance. hopefully this made sense haha
@joshienieto35842 жыл бұрын
@@drewisdreaming I get your point, this doesn't change the fact that I think it's silly if ppl get offended when they see a person wearing the said attire that does not belong in their culture. Who knows, maybe the person did due their research and respect it, but other ppl are quick to say "culture appropriation!" Like most of the time it's damn clothes, get over it. You won't die, move on and stop being sensitive. Not saying you particularly are, I'm saying "you" as general public.
@drewisdreaming2 жыл бұрын
@@joshienieto3584 no i totally get that, i do think that everyone is WAY too sensitive nowadays and tend to jump the gun so quickly on stuff instead of focusing on all the people causing ACTUAL issues in the world. but i also see the other side of it in that a lot of people are so used to dealing with people disrespecting their culture that they assume most situations are like that, and i can't fully blame them for reacting like that if they've gone through it a lot even though it causes them to unfairly be overly suspicious of people who are genuinely innocent or well-meaning. anyway, i agree with you and i agree with points on the other side too! i think everything is just heavily reliant on context so i look at the situation before forming any opinions. thank you for being civil and respectful in your response and i appreciate your perspective!! :)
@joshienieto35842 жыл бұрын
@@drewisdreaming it is very unfortunate that the ppl disrespecting other cultures get more attention. She is absolutely lovely, I think this is the most beautiful face up you’ve done - the amount of care you took in details like sclera shading and thinning the eyelines absolutely shows in the refined finish! I love the outfit and the character, and her personality sure writes itself - ethereal beauty named Rice Cake? Sounds like a bubbly cutie to me! Glad you’re back ☺️

that doll was beautiful and as much as I'm overjoyed that you're back, you do know that you can take more time off, right? You don't have to rush yourself❤

So glad to see your back! Made my day to see this and I hope everything is going well for you and your family! Also I adore this doll so much! It was really cool to see you do something like this with the Korean culture! I didn't know about all of this, really cool to see and the doll is so cute! Hope you are doing well and can't wait to see what you create next!

Songpyeon looks amazing! I love how colourful and layered she is and I think you did a fantastic job of balancing the fantasy and real life elements of the design! I would not mind you making more designs based on this theme. Also super glad your back! But if you ever need more time to take care of your baby then that comes first! We've all waited this long, waiting a little longer in nothing to us true fans!

Wow, what a comeback! The eyes look so lovely. And the name is super cute. The hair coming from the back makes her hair look more balanced, in my mind. I like it.

I'm so glad to see that parenthood is treating you well so far, even if it's chaotic!! Much love to Dollightful Jr. & Husbando, & I won't lie I would LOVE to see the other designs as well! Maybe make it a series like the dragons except shorter & surprising us with different color palettes based on unique Norigae! Take care of yourself first ofc & we love you lots!

I like it when stuff comes out warped or darker then you colored it before hand, because it makes it look like someone actually wore it and its not brand spanking new, it adds character.

Happy to see being a sleepdeprived new mom hasn’t totally killed creativity. Love the doll and the fact we also get to learn small bits of Korean folklore and culture through this process to. Hope to see more Korean inspired dolls in the future.

oh my gosh katherine this is quite possibly my favorite doll you've ever done, and that's saying something because i'm a big fan of your work! i love norigae too and the norigae-as-hair thing is SUCH a cute idea i love it to bits. i'd love to see you do more traditional korean inspired dolls, korea has such beautiful traditional fashion and so much interesting folklore to take inspiration from. a scary gumiho doll would be perfect for halloween! i might have to attempt something like that myself, if i can ever get up the nerve to attempt to make a hanbok with my meager sewing skills.

Wow! This was such a complicated doll and you managed to make her look spectacular! So colorful and pretty. I love your attention to detail and traditional pieces. I also enjoyed how you added some personal touches to the video; like your wedding photo (you looked absolutely stunning btw) and the view of your art room. I hope you are enjoying motherhood and that you and your family are doing well. Thank you for taking the time to make videos for us! ❤

So gorgeous! The traditional outfits of other cultures have always looked so pretty (I'd love to wear some if I could lol), so if you ever get bored one day you could probably do a series on making the traditional outfits of other cultures. Maybe even with a fantasy touch like with what you did with this doll?

I remember when I was little, and my mom and I went to HMart, for at least two years we regularly saw this beautiful pair of Korean Wedding dolls. It was one of the first times I realized I was part of a different culture beyond eating food my classmates never knew about (im a fourth Korean and my mom only lived in Korea till she was 8- she was a military brat). Long way to say, if you want an excuse to make more fantasy hanboks, you could totally try making a Korean Bride doll! ^_^

So happy to see you back! I've watched for several years, going back to when I was 12 (crazy right?), you made me want to try customizing my old dolls, and my family made fun of me, but I still kept going :) Haven't made a doll in a long time, but this has inspired me to dig into my Ojibwe roots and make an Ojibwe doll! We'll see how it goes ;D
