Repair and Gold Leaf Gilding! Antique Mirror Restoration

Journey to the Château, Ep. 277 - In this episode, Patrick and Stuart finish the work on the restoration of their antique French Louis XV-XVI mirror. In its recent history, this antique giltwood mirror had been completely painted with a matte bronze color paint. Patrick and Stuart finish to reveal the remaining original gold gilding, do some minor repairs and cleaning, and then add more gold leaf gilding to bring the mirror back to life.

Of all the gilding I have watched on KZbin, you two would have to be the best at it. You don't have huge amounts, hardly any, of waste or bits floating everywhere. The mirror looks absolutely beautiful, all the hard work has paid off.

250 years of candle sot and cleaning probably with newspapers. Removing that and restoring the damage is a task. I think it is burned ombre or burned siena that was used. Don't underestimate yourself, Patrick, you and Stuart are a great team.

Good morning Patrick & Stuart, nothing has really changed since I watched your going's on at the Chateaux. You did a magnificent work on the restoration of the mirror, and "what" a gorgeous mirror it is!! All of that wood sections have been carved by hand, in those days there was not any programmed machines like today, and that is why restoration work on antiques are so very expensive, alas, they are not all qualified to do repairs to valuable pieces. So, doing it yourselves, you know exactly how to go about repairing this valuable outstanding mirror. Even though you have sunny days, I have heard that Europe is bitterly cold and some days very miserable with with snow and strong winds. We had wonderful rain yesterday, the first in a month with temp. over 29 - 34 deg. C. The heat was most uncomfortable, and you could not be outside in the sun for a while as you felt totally exhausted and the plants and shrubs were truly tested and the laws were burnt, some area were burnt dead and we did not water as you can well understand. One of the rain tanks was emptied into the pool and it looked to me like it made hardly any difference in filling up. So yesterday, we were extremely blessed with wonderful rain, and we are sure more will fall today and tomorrow, Gauteng suffered much where Natal had almost flooded out as well as the Cape Province. I was thinking of you and Patrick how you were doing and then this morning a picture of Journey to the Chateaux a appeared - I have taken leave from the blogs as it was just too time consuming for me. I could not manage all of my day. I am well pleased to see both of you are looking good and as usual busy as bees. Do keep snug, take care and be alert. Do not take for granted poisons fumes as we think I will be quick I do not need protection, it does not work. Hence, do take care in all you do.
