Thank you. I'm 65 female on a small income. It would take me 4 months to save $1000 to fix at pep boys. I have a hairline crack in plastic radiator just below the big hose. I'm going to do this quick fix until I can save for new radiator if needed. Unless it fixes it permanently. I've no family. So this is my choice. Thanks again. It's a 2004 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo

Thanks for the update. I've got a real beater that hopefully can be on the road another 2 years, it just keeps starting and going. Not long enough to invest in a new radiator so hopefully a patch will work, just trying to figure out the best one.

What about if I snapped off the part where the radiator hose pushes on to, do you think it could work?

The biggest issue is the plastic radiator will deform and expand the crack once pressure buildup, especially the crack extends long enough. That's what happened on my radiator. Tried jb weld, doesn't work well

How about using a patch made of appropriate material to apply to the outside of the break as reinforcement after joining the parts? Would be like doubling the wall thickness in the weakened area.

You need a solvent that hardens but has some flex to it. A tiny amount to give to driving engine heat.

Didn’t work for my situation. My leak was at the inlet to the upper hose an I’m guess there is a lot of pressure and in that location it is very hot. Trying to use a high temperature self adhering silicone tape.

never put any thing in the radiator to stop a leak.. it will plug coolant passages and the tubes in the radiator, if they are partially blocked, the stop leak will block it the rest of the way.. same with the heater core.. not to mention heater valves.. also it can affect the thermostat..

First off i used to rebuild/repair radiators and even repaired heater cores that radiator shops claim they cant be repaired.. which is a lie to sell a new core.. more profit.. Plastic Radiators degrade over time based on heat and time.. as the older the plastic radiator ( a Nylon Composite) gets and hot, it degrades, mainly around the intake side of the radiator and becomes soft.. so repairing the crack is basically a temporary fix but can last a long time, depending on the age an how hot it gets.. Im replacing a radiator that is 22 years old 180,000 miles and the plastic around the intake side where its cracked, can be scraped off with my finger nail.. that is really soft.. I wouldnt fix it unless the plastic is hard.. when repairing plastic never use epoxy because it can come off, due to the fact moisture from the crack, can get underneath the epoxy and cause it to separate from the repair.. one guy suggested using Crazy Glue and baking soda as it becomes rock hard.. but i dont know if it is porous or not.. or if it will stick to the radiator.. for metal, you are right, if it can be fixed, personally i like to use expensive metal, silver solder.. I can use a bottle of map gas or propane.. but 50/50 is what I used in a shop setting..

General Motors recommends radiator sealant wafers, which will seal just about any leaking cooling system in a vehicle. They put them in all of their vehicles right after they roll them off of the factory floor and first fire the engines. That being said, putting multiple sealants into your cooling system can clog it up, making the issue of a leaking radiator the least of your problems, because now you have insufficient coolant going through to the motor, and you will overheat. Overheating a modern engine is death.

Nearly all radiators are made of plastic these days even on high-end cars. If you get a crack in your radiator replace it, they're not that expensive and relatively easy to do yourself.

Yes it is expensive. Pep boys wants to charge me 900-1000 for a new radiator. I'm on a small set income. No family. It's a small hairline crack just below the big hose connection to radiator I wiped it and can feel the crack with my finger. I can see it leaks . But if this quick fix with jb works it will buy me time 4 months just to save 1000.

Why did you put this crap in when you had the actual leak was fixed. It can plug heater radiator core, and the main radiator passages.
